Port Douglas is where you'll find the world's largest reef system and the planet's oldest rainforest, offering an unparalleled experience. What more could you ask for? Our own children loved snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef, zip-lining through the rainforest canopy, playing on the stunning beaches, going on riverboat cruises to spot wild crocodiles, and indulging in delicious exotic ice cream made from rainforest fruits.

When considering a family trip to Florida, most people immediately think of Orlando. However, the Florida Keys, particularly Marathon, allow families to experience the state's more natural side.

Explore the oldest home in the Florida Keys outside of Key West and discover remnants of the Flagler Railroad that used to connect all of the Florida Keys.

For younger kids who may not be up for more adventurous water activities, they will enjoy a nature scavenger hunt, swimming with fish, or meeting rescued birds at the Wild Bird Sanctuary. You can even have lunch under a large tiki hut restaurant just off the scenic Seven Mile Highway.

Marathon is also a great family destination due to its proximity to other islands like Key West and Islamorada. It offers a different kind of adventure and proves that a family vacation in Florida doesn't have to revolve around roller coasters.

Waikiki Beach

Why visit? With its warm, shallow, and relatively calm waters, Waikiki Beach is the perfect place for kids to learn how to surf.

What to do: Sign up for a lesson at one of the Star Beachboys stands, located on the sand in front of the statue of Duke Kahanamoku, the father of modern surfing. You can also try surf schools like Big Wave Dave and Surfer Girl Academy. While on Oahu, make sure to visit the historic Pearl Harbor sites, including the USS Arizona Memorial.

Where to stay: The conveniently located Hyatt Place Waikiki Beach offers airport transportation, an on-site pool, and free breakfast. For a boutique experience, consider the Aqua Oasis further inland.

Sesame Place

Best for ages: 2-5

Why go? Sesame Place is the ultimate theme park for toddlers and preschoolers who love Elmo and the gang.

What to do: Spend half of your time enjoying the water attractions like The Count's Splash Castle, Big Bird's Rambling River, and the Teeny Tiny Tidal Wave pool. Then, dry off and experience the rest of the park. Take a thrilling ride in the Flying Cookie Jars, hop on Flyin' Fish and Peek-A-Bug in Elmo's World, and explore Sesame Neighborhood, including Oscar's Wacky Taxi.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota

Best for ages: 6-12

Why visit? North Dakota is often overlooked, but it's a hidden gem worth exploring!

What to do: Experience the beauty of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, named after the former president who lived there. Explore the dramatic badlands and visit the Painted Canyon. Test your wildlife spotting skills by looking for bison and elk. Just outside the park, you'll find the town of Medora, where horses are still a common mode of transportation.

Where to stay: Lodging options are limited but full of character! Consider staying at The Rough Riders Hotel in Medora, which features a pool and a two-story rock fireplace. Another option is The Badlands Hotel, also in Medora, which offers slightly larger rooms and is only two blocks away from the Medora Children's Park.

The Black Hills, South Dakota

Why visit? Don't miss a visit to Mount Rushmore and discover the stunning mountains and badlands, which are often overlooked but offer some of the best destinations in the country.

What to do: Learn about American history with hands-on lessons available at Mount Rushmore. During the summer, make sure to stay for the evening flag ceremony. You can also see bison, try your hand at gold panning, explore ghost towns, and visit the world's largest collection of reptiles.

Where to stay: Stay at the KOA camping resorts in Rapid City, Mount Rushmore, or Bad Lands/White River. If you prefer modern rooms, the Hampton Inn Deadwood at Tin Lizzie Gaming Resort in historic Deadwood is an excellent choice.

Hamilton, New Zealand

Our favorite family travel destination is Hamilton in New Zealand. Hamilton is New Zealand’s best-kept secret for family holidays.

Our favorite activities include the Waikato Museum, which offers dedicated kid's discovery areas, the Zoo where you can have cheeky Kaka land on your shoulder in the walk-through aviary, and the themed Hamilton gardens that transport you into a new civilization at every turn!

But what sets Hamilton apart are the numerous 'destination playgrounds'. These incredible parks have all the fun fixtures, water features, in-ground trampolines, and multi-story playhouses. They are perfect for keeping the little ones entertained while you enjoy a coffee from a nearby cafe!

Portland

The city of Portland in Oregon is known for its abundance of parks, cycling opportunities, breweries, and museums. It is also renowned for its eco-friendly initiatives, which reminded me of the environmentally conscious city of Amsterdam.

One thing that stood out to us about Portland was the sheer number of unique and quirky activities available for families. The phrase "Keep Portland Weird!" is seen all around the city on bumper stickers and walls, serving as a playful reminder of its eccentric charm.

For families, there is no shortage of options in Portland. From picturesque nature walks to interactive museums and family-friendly breweries, there is something for everyone. Additionally, due to its location, Portland serves as a convenient base for exploring the breathtaking natural attractions on the outskirts of the city, including waterfalls, forests, mountains, and the dramatic coastline.

London

London is undoubtedly one of the best family travel destinations, offering endless opportunities for fun and exploration. As longtime residents, we continue to discover new and amazing things to do in this incredible city throughout the year.

One of the highlights of London for families is the abundance of museums with kid-friendly exhibits that cover a range of subjects, from natural history to technology and design.

Downtown London offers classic attractions such as spooky tours of the Tower of London and cruises along the Thames River. There are even cruise companies that provide entertainment packs specifically for kids. For panoramic views of the city, a visit to the London Eye is a must, and they also offer special experiences for children, such as puppet shows.

In addition to all the famous attractions, London offers adventure activities like treetop adventures and walking across the Millennium Dome. For Harry Potter enthusiasts, there are numerous opportunities to explore the studios, filming locations, and even platform 9 3/4. This is just a glimpse of what London has to offer for families.

When people think of Amsterdam, family-friendly activities might not be the first thing that comes to mind. However, we were pleasantly surprised to find that Amsterdam is actually one of the best family travel destinations.

There is a wealth of things to do in Amsterdam, from visiting the stunning tulip fields when they are in bloom to exploring the city's fantastic family-friendly museums.

Exploring Amsterdam itself is an adventure, and we loved renting clog bikes that the kids could sit in while we pedaled around the city, taking in the sights and visiting windmills. The city also offers canal tours that cater to families with kid-friendly entertainment. For a unique experience, you can even captain your own canal tour and enjoy a picnic along the way.

Amsterdam also boasts petting zoos, playgrounds, and a fun family theme park.

Swiss Mountains

Our personal recommendation for a family travel destination is Switzerland, particularly the Swiss mountains. We consider this country, and its stunning alpine landscape, to be one of the best places to visit.

Switzerland offers a charming atmosphere in its mountain villages and towns that is truly unique. The landscapes are breathtaking, the food is delicious, and there are countless activities for families to enjoy.

We make it a point to visit Switzerland at least twice a year, whether it's skiing in winter or hiking in summer. The kids have even asked us if we could move there permanently!

Some of our favorite places in Switzerland include the Lucerne area, Zermatt, Mt Titlis, Grindelwald, Jungfraujoch, and Schynige Platte. Each of these locations offers its own special experiences and attractions.

Conclude your journey at One Love Surf School in the coastal town of San Juan Del Sur on the Pacific side, or venture to the Caribbean side to explore the Corn Islands.
