It looks like fate has smiled upon those of you who had to work during the summer months but still have vacation on the brain. The number of tourists and consequently prices are falling in popular travel destinations such as Hawaii, North Carolina, and Europe. Even though the temperatures are likely to be lower, there will still be plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. How about you? The western Massachusetts region known as the Berkshires is about midway between New York City and Boston, and it is known for its farms, lakes, quaint towns, rolling hills, and vibrant autumn foliage beginning around the month of October. It's a beautiful three-hour drive from either city to the mountains, where you can relax and enjoy the fresh air while hiking, leaf-peeping, kayaking, fishing, or just browsing antique shops. Choose between the luxurious Miraval Berkshires Resort & Spa and the charming Victorian-era Apple Tree Inn during your time in Lenox. In addition to The Lenox Collection's three hotels, there is also the National Register-listed Wheatleigh, a luxurious inn.

You can get into the spirit of Oktoberfest in Vienna and Dürnstein, Austria, and then continue the party in Vilshofen, Germany, with Bavarian folk music, dancing, pretzels, and beer. The Magna on the Danube departs from Budapest and sails the river to picturesque towns in the Wachau Valley and the Danube Bend. The AmaMagna, twice as wide as conventional river ships, has room for 200 passengers and features a wellness studio, multiple dining venues, and an array of excursions.

North Carolina's Outer Banks towns have fewer tourists, cheaper rates, and better weather than in the summer. Time to get out on the water and reel in some tasty fish or shellfish. Come for Oyster Week (October 10–16), the Outer Banks Seafood Festival (October 15), the Duck Jazz Festival, or any of the other many fall celebrations. You can either stay in town at the Sanderling Resort or in the national park at the Inn on Pamlico Sound. Views of Silver Lake can be seen from the nearby Ocracoke Harbour Inn.

Savannah is a popular destination due to its beautiful public squares, Spanish moss, and friendly locals. Tourists are also flocking to the city's historically significant riverfront. The area, which features a restored power plant from 1912 and is now the center of a lively entertainment destination, exemplifies Savannah's development. The riverwalk in the Plant Riverside District is now lined with restaurants, nightclubs, boutiques, and cafes. Only a short stroll away is The Alida, a sleek hotel named for Alida Harper Fowlkes, a pioneering Savannah businesswoman and preservationist of the early 20th century. Guests can relax in the hotel's plush rooms, dine at one of its restaurants, and unwind with a drink or light snack at The Lost Square, a rooftop lounge with panoramic city views.

Warm weather continues into October in Marbella, located on southern Spain's Costa del Sol, with sunny days and temperatures in the 70s. Tourists flock there in the summer to enjoy the more than 16 miles of coastline, marinas, hotels, restaurants, and shops. Marbella, first inhabited by the Romans, now features both archaeological sites and a historic district with buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries. You can choose from opulent hotels to more laid-back bed and breakfasts. The Club Med Magna Marbella, located at the base of the Sierra Blanca Mountains with views of the Mediterranean, is one of the newest hotels in the area. The Club Med Spa and five pools make this four-trident (four-star) resort ideal for families with children.

The great wildebeest migration, the world's largest herd movement, occurs between June and October, when over a million animals move across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in search of grass and water. It's quite a thrilling sight to see zebras and other animals, including a variety of predators, join the journey. Mahali Mzuri, a luxury safari camp in the Kenyan Bush, was named the Best Hotel Worldwide by Travel Leisure's World's Best Awards in 2021. A couple of other five-star options can be found just outside Masai Mara National Park, at AndBeyond Bateleur Camp and Mara Bushtops.

Low season in Jackson Hole means lower hotel prices and beautiful fall foliage. The weather is perfect for going on a hike and then warming up by a fire in the evening. Clear skies and dry air make for ideal stargazing conditions at night, so don't miss out on the opportunity. Travel to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks within a day and return to the newly renovated Mountain Modern or the luxurious Cloudveil, an Autograph Collection Hotel, both located just off of Town Square. Other hotels in Jackson Hole include the Lodge at Jackson Hole, the Virginian Lodge, and the Hotel Jackson. Located in Teton Village, Caldera House offers spacious two- and four-bedroom apartments.

Many seasoned travelers recommend visiting the Greek islands in October, after the peak summer tourist season has ended but while the sea is still comfortably warm. The average temperature in Hora (Mykonos Town) is in the 70s, making it the perfect time to go window shopping and people watching among the whitewashed buildings. Take in the scenery, go for a boat ride, and taste some local Greek wines. Cali Mykonos' suites and villas sound wonderful, what with their Aegean views, private pools, terraces, and on-site spa. The suites and villas at Kalesma Mykonos, which are located on a hilltop about two miles from Mykonos Town, offer breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea and the surrounding islands.

Located in northwest Turkey on the Bosphorus Strait, this fascinating city serves as a gateway between Europe and Asia. Istanbul has many attractions, including its famous cuisine, shops, and historical buildings. Topkapi Palace, the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, the Hippodrome of Constantinople, the Grand Bazaar, and the Spice Bazaar are just some of the many attractions in Istanbul. Both the Istanbul Coffee Festival (October 6-9) and Contemporary Istanbul (October 16-22) will celebrate the country's coffee culture with shows, concerts, and more. Located on the European side of the Bosphorus Strait, the chic Shangri-La Bosphorus occupies a historic building from the 1930s, while the brand new Mandarin Oriental Bosphorus is set in a modern building.

Now is the time to visit Hawaii, as the off-season between the peak and low seasons offers great hotel rates and a plethora of activities. The month of October will be filled with events celebrating the Honolulu Pride Festival & Parade, presented by the Kaimana Hotel. The main parade will take place on the 15th. In the months of October and November, Hawaii hosts its annual Food & Wine Festival. The Hawaiian Airlines Moloka'i Hoe, held annually on October 2, is the most prestigious outrigger canoe race in the world. Stay at the Alohilani Resort on Waikiki Beach, which is home to two Iron Chef Morimoto restaurants, or at the Turtle Bay Resort on Oahu's north shore. Take a surfing lesson from Waikiki Beachboys while staying at the Sheraton Waikiki or The Royal Hawaiian. Hawaiian high tea can be had at the historic Moana Surfrider on the beach.

Athens, Georgia is a college town about an hour's drive northeast of Atlanta with a thriving arts scene and music culture that helped give rise to R&B.
