Out of the 50 states, 20 do not have any national parks. We could justify, Mount Rainier’s position as the number three best national park on this list, but we think John Muir did it much better when he called it,

This most heavily glaciated peak in the contiguous US is downright mesmerizing.

Upon arrival, we were mesmerized by the blue mesas, striped hills, warm winds, distant storms, rainbows, petroglyphs, and the most beautiful collection of rocks (petrified wood – leave it there) we have ever seen. Oh, and there were no crowds!
We did dock it some points due to its lack of amenities – unfortunately, there are no campgrounds in the park. However, located right off the I-40 in Arizona, Petrified Forest is a great park to add to your next southwest road trip.

In the winter, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and backcountry camping are popular among the outdoors enthusiasts. Crater Lake actually sees more snowfall than most other parks in the lower 48.

We were surprised when we heard that Gateway Arch National Park had been designated as a full national park, alongside renowned parks like Yellowstone and Yosemite.
Typically, the process of receiving a congressional designation as a national park involves extensive justification statements and passionate debates. However, in the case of Gateway Arch National Park, the justification statement is just a brief paragraph that lacks the necessary criteria set forth by Congress.
While we support the creation of new and diverse parks, it seems that a National Historic Site or National Historic Park designation would be more appropriate in this case.

Is Gateway Arch Really a National Park?
It is worth noting that the need for the national park designation was not clearly demonstrated in the case of Gateway Arch National Park. It appears that the rush to have it designated by the 4th of July was a significant factor in its elevation to park status.
With a mere 62 acres, Gateway Arch National Park is the smallest park by far and can fit into the next smallest park, Hot Springs, more than 88 times.
This raises questions about the political negotiations that may have taken place behind the scenes to label this arch as a "National Park". It could be an interesting topic for investigative journalism.
How Many National Parks Are in the US?
Just to clarify, there are only 63 congressionally designated National Parks in the United States.

However, getting there comes with a cost. Average flight prices from the mainland US typically range from $1,800 - $3,000, putting it out of reach for most visitors.
Exploring the park's incredible beauty isn't easy either, with limited hiking trails and few park facilities.

Similar to previous years, national parks in the West dominated the list of reader favorites, nabbing more than half of the 25 spots. Denali National Park (No. 8) in Alaska is home to the highest peak in North America, measuring at a whopping 20,310 feet above sea level, while Yosemite National Park (No. 3) in California draws visitors with its gushing waterfalls, ancient sequoias, and world-famous vistas, like Tunnel View and Glacier Point. “Yosemite is one of my favorite places on Earth,” remarked one reader. “The stunning park's views will never cease to amaze me, and there's truly something for everyone here. I'll keep visiting for the rest of my life.”
Voters had plenty of praise for national parks on the East Coast, in the South, and the Midwest, too. In fact, according to one reader, Acadia National Park in Maine (No. 17) is “one of the most beautiful places to visit in the Northeastern U.S. It’s perfect for hiking and taking in the breathtaking scenery, especially the sunrise.” Great Smoky Mountain National Park (No. 7), which straddles the North Carolina/Tennessee border, made the list again this year — no surprise since it has been the most-visited national park in the country for more than a decade. Readers raved about its abundance of wildlife and all-ages appeal. One voter said, “Great Smoky Mountain National Park is a very family-oriented destination where you can feel the real spirit of America. People are friendly, the air is pure, and the views of the mountains and nature are just breathtaking.”

We’ve all seen the famous bearcam of the grizzlies hunting salmon at Brooks Falls, and we all want to see that in person (safely behind the plexiglass viewing area) along with the countless other hard-to-fathom landscapes that exist within this amazing park.
The fact of the matter is that it just ain’t easy (or cheap) to do so. Getting to Katmai typically requires multiple flights and thousands of dollars which puts it squarely out of reach for most Americans.
Accessing Katmai National Park is expensive. There are no roads that lead into the park which means getting to Katmai requires a flight (and not on a commercial flight).
Brooks Falls Bear Watching – The world famous Katmai National Park bear camera resides at Brooks Falls. Getting to Brooks Falls is not cheap requiring yet another non-commercial flight.
From King Salmon it the cost to Brooks Falls is around $300. Once here, behold the best bear viewing on the planet via a safe viewing platform.

There’s a national park in the Virgin Islands!? Yes! And it’s everything you could imagine and more.
While the 2017 hurricanes forever changed the landscape here, leveling most of the towering palms and mangroves, it is still stunningly beautiful albeit in a different way than before.
Warm crystal waters, palm trees, white sand beaches, sea turtles, iguanas, ocean sunsets, Trunk Bay, and more await you here.
Getting to the island is a bit tricky as you have to fly to the neighboring island of St. Thomas first, rent a car, and then take the car on the ferry to St. John where the park is located.
The layout of this park is a bit funky, somewhat like that of Acadia with roads on St. John that lead in and out of the park (sometimes without even realizing you’ve left).

The scenery, while special, particularly for those who don’t live in a desert, doesn’t vary much throughout the park.

The other section is the more tropical side (near Hana) with jaw-dropping waterfalls, ocean, palm trees, and rainforest.

The greater of the two Texas parks both in size and scenery, Big Bend is a hot time. Quite literally hot, if you’re visiting during pretty much any season other than Winter.
This park’s proximity to the Mexican border (right on it) means it gets awfully hot in Spring and Summer with temperatures often climbing into the triple digits.
If not for the remoteness of the park (it is out in the middle of nowhere – we’re talking 4.5 hours from a major airport or city) it would rank much higher on this list as with this sort of solitude comes fewer amenities and less food options.

To reach Wrangell, you'll embark on a bit of a trek from Anchorage, approximately five hours away, and arrive at McCarthy, Alaska. From there, you can access the historic Kennecott mine and Root Glacier.

However, if you enjoy hiking, the park also allows off-trail exploration in its backcountry, with the chance to encounter bison and bighorn sheep. Additionally, visitors to Katmai can take a day trip to the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in the 20th century and one of the most significant eruptions recorded in history.

Number of Visitors: In 2022, the park welcomed 34,000 visitors, making it the 7th least visited national park in the USA.
Top Experiences: Observe bears at Brooks Falls, take a day trip to the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, go fishing, enjoy a flightseeing tour, visit Naknek Lake, hike to the summit of Dumpling Mountain.
Ultimate Adventure: Katmai National Park is one of the most remote national parks in the US, providing a true sense of adventure. Most visitors fly into Brooks Camp on a floatplane from King Salmon, but it is also possible to reach the park by boat.

The Shafer Canyon switchbacks lead to the White Rim, where one can spend a few days driving through remote landscapes. The White Rim Road offers adventure, rugged landscapes, and fewer crowds, making it one of the best things to do in the national park system.

Ultimate Adventure: Driving or mountain biking the White Rim Road, a 100-mile dirt road that loops around the Island in the Sky mesa. Trips take 2 to 3 days by 4x4 and 3 to 5 days by mountain bike. Camping along the White Rim Road at night allows for incredible views of the night sky.
Canyonlands Itinerary: It is recommended to spend at least two days in Canyonlands National Park. This allows for one day at Island in the Sky and one day in The Needles. More time can be devoted to white water rafting, hiking, and driving the White Rim Road.
When to Go: Spring and fall are the best times to visit Canyonlands, offering pleasant weather and lower crowds. Summer months experience higher crowds and soaring temperatures.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
