15 Affordable Vacation Ideas in the United States
Don't stress about planning a budget-friendly family vacation, because we've got you covered. Here are 15 affordable vacation ideas in the United States that will help you stick to your budget. So, it's the perfect time to put on your favorite playlist, grab your sunglasses, and start preparing with your travel checklist.
1. Explore Your Own City
When we say explore your own city, we don't mean just going to your regular Sunday restaurant and calling it a night. We're talking about being a tourist in your own town! Visit local art galleries, explore nearby trails, and try out that new restaurant you've been wanting to go to. The best part about touring your own city is that it's easy to be thrifty, which keeps your budget and bank account happy.
2. Go Camping
You can choose the traditional "sleeping outside" camping experience or rent a cabin. Enjoy the great outdoors!
If you want the RV/camper experience without driving one, Airbnb has you covered for as little as $100 per night. Their hosts offer decked-out campers that stay in place while you enjoy the comforts of being indoors. Some hosts will even deliver the camper to you.
3. Visit Less Popular Beaches
Some beaches are more popular and expensive than others. However, if you know where to look, you can still enjoy the beach without breaking the bank. To have an affordable beach vacation, go during the off-season, choose a beach close to home, and explore less popular spots.
Beaches along the Gulf are generally cheaper than East and West Coast beaches. Even though the water may look different depending on the location, a beach is a beach when you're coming from a landlocked area, right? Gulf beaches also offer less expensive hotels, food, and activities.
4. Book Travel Packages from Warehouse Stores
Warehouse stores like Costco offer great deals on vacation packages. If you're planning an elaborate vacation, consider checking out what they have to offer. For example, one Costco deal we found included five days of accommodations for two adults at Universal's Cabana Bay Beach Resort and Universal Orlando tickets for around $1,306. If you booked the hotel stay and Universal passes separately, it would cost $1,861. So, you can save about $550 by being smart about where you book.
Remember that these travel packages change quickly, so the exact deal may not be available. The key is to know where to look for bargains.
5. Stay with Friends or Family
Staying with friends or family may not be the glamorous type of vacation, but it's an easy and cheap option. Plus, you get to spend quality time with your loved ones. More often than not, you won't have to pay for lodging or even some meals. So, your main expense will be getting to your destination, which significantly cuts back on costs.
Make sure to be a great guest while staying with friends or family. Show your gratitude by paying for groceries, cooking meals, or treating them to dinner or dessert.
6. Travel During the Off-Season
While summer may be the favorite time for vacations, delaying your trip by a few months can save you a significant amount of money. Traveling during fall break or after Labor Day weekend can be a great affordable vacation idea. However, peak season and off-season will vary depending on your destination. Avoid traveling during summer months, winter break, and holidays. Do your research before booking.
7. Weekend Trip Getaway
If you need a quick escape, a weekend trip can be just what you need. It may not offer the same level of relaxation as a 10-day vacation, but it's a more affordable option. Budget for a weekend getaway, and you'll be pleasantly surprised by how affordable it can be.
8. Take a Weekday Vacation
Booking a hotel or Airbnb on weekdays is often cheaper than doing so for the weekend. If you can use some paid time off at work, consider booking a midweek vacation. This way, you can take advantage of lower accommodation costs.
9. Visit National Parks
Nature is usually free to enjoy, and national parks offer incredible natural experiences at affordable prices. Stay at campsites within the park and take advantage of free activities like hiking, wildlife viewing, and ranger-led programs. Keep in mind that most national parks charge a small entrance fee per vehicle or person.
10. Stay at a Budget-Friendly Bed-and-Breakfast
While some bed-and-breakfasts are known for their high prices, many can be budget-friendly. Rates for a bed-and-breakfast in Nashville, for example, start around $128 per night depending on the season. Considering you'll get homemade breakfast and other meals throughout your stay, it can be a great deal. Some bed-and-breakfasts even offer extras like coffee and cookies, or free use of kayaks, bikes, or canoes.
11. Get Insider Tips
If you're planning a trip to popular destinations like Disney World, do your research and gather insider tips to save money. Scour the internet, ask friends and family, and learn all the things you need to know before booking your trip. Even in "the most magical place on Earth," it's possible to have a budget-friendly experience.
12. Explore Your Own Region
You don't have to go to famous destinations like Disney, Paris, or take a cruise to create memorable family experiences. Simply take a short drive to a town one to two hours away from your home. You'll have a chance to explore a new place, avoid busy areas, and save money.
13. Book in Advance
One of the best ways to find affordable vacation deals is to book your trip as far in advance as possible. Planning ahead increases your chances of getting good prices. Online travel hubs like Groupon and Expedia are also great options for finding last-minute vacation deals. If you're looking for last-minute hotel deals, consider using HotelTonight to score major discounts.
14. Go on a Day Trip
The most expensive part of any trip is usually the cost of accommodations. So, why not skip it altogether? Look for cute towns near you, pack up the family, and take a day trip. The only costs you'll need to budget for are gas and activities. You can even bring your own food for a picnic.
15. Try a Home Swap
If you know another family interested in a staycation, consider doing a home swap for a week. This allows both families to experience the feeling of being out of town, similar to staying in an Airbnb. Just make sure to leave their house better than you found it.
Los Angeles to Hermosa Beach, California
Makito Umekita/Travel Leisure
Just a few miles away from Los Angeles, Hermosa Beach is a perfect destination for a budget-friendly getaway. Stay in one of the charming beachfront hotels, like the laidback Sea Sprite Hotel or the affordable elegance of H2O Hermosa. Enjoy delicious food options such as pizza, burgers, tacos, and more near the pier. Grab a slice from Paisanos Pizza & Pasta for a beachfront lunch or have a picnic on the beach.
Spend a lazy day relaxing on the sandy beach or splashing in the waves. Rent a bike to cruise The Strand or take a leisurely stroll to check out the homes along the path. Don't miss the opportunity to admire Hermosa's murals, which celebrate the city's history and culture. If your budget allows, treat yourself to a jazz brunch at The Lighthouse Cafe, a historic venue since 1949, or catch a show at The Comedy & Magic Club.

With an affordable admission fee and reasonable camping and lodging costs, Yellowstone offers an incredible natural experience at a low cost. Stay at campsites within the park, such as the stunning Bridge Bay Campground, and enjoy free activities like hiking, wildlife viewing, and ranger-led programs.
Thailand
Thailand holds a special place in my heart, as it's where my travel journey began. It's where I decided to quit my job and explore the world. Thailand is truly incredible.
And the best part? It's super affordable.
Thailand has been a popular backpacking destination for decades, and you can easily get by on $25-35 USD per day thanks to cheap guesthouses, budget street food (starting at $1 USD!), local buses, and the abundance of cheap and free attractions. If you spend most of your time on the islands or opt for more expensive accommodations, expect to pay around USD per day. However, even at that price, Thailand remains one of the most budget-friendly destinations in the world that you shouldn't miss!

Back in my budget backpacking days around Southeast Asia, Laos was one of the two destinations where I was able to keep my budget at $30/day, even though the accommodation was slightly more expensive than most places in Southeast Asia at that time. Many of the amazing activities you can do in Laos are cheap. I paid $2.50 to see one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world, for a full-day tubing experience along the Vang Vieng river, and for an awesome tiger balm massage. You can also rent a motorbike for cheap and venture off to the smaller towns, where everything is even cheaper! With more and more new hostels built to cater to the increasing number of backpackers, you can go for cheaper for longer. However, if you have a bit more to spend, you can get a gorgeous room for closer to $35 which would easily cost $100 in the US.
- Meals: $3 – per day. Some hostels provide a basic breakfast
- Accommodation: $5-$10 per night in a hostel
- Transportation: – $15 for a motorbike for the day (prices may vary depending on the bike condition and your haggling skills), or up to $25 for an intercity bus ticket
- SIM card with data: for 1.5GB with 30-day validity
Bangkok, Thailand
Asia
Book a trip to the mystical country of Thailand, one of the most underrated travel destinations in the world. Known as the Land of Smiles, this Southeast Asian trip of a lifetime is complete with relaxing, adventurous, culinary, and cultural experiences, all of which are totally budget-friendly. The most affordable city when it comes to travel is Thailand’s capital of Bangkok. It’s a city sometimes associated with its backpacking scene, however according to a luxury-on-a-budget survey by money.co.uk, Bangkok was the cheapest city in the world for luxury car rentals, Michelin-starred meals, and five-star hotel stays, with the cheapest luxury hotels starting at $110. As far as getting there, we found flights for 0 round trip from the East Coast in the late spring (you’ll want to avoid visiting during the steamy mid-summer months).
Once there, travelers can take advantage of other affordable luxuries, such as authentic Thai spas (at $10 an hour), incredible local cuisine for just a few dollars, and a tuk-tuk ride (motorized three-wheel rickshaws popular around the city) for just $1.50 to see the golden temples that line the Chao Phraya River.

China
China has fascinated travelers ever since Marco Polo traversed the Silk Road in 1275. While the days of China being a dirt-cheap destination are gone, the country remains a budget destination — and one of the cheapest in Asia — but with a caveat. You need to get out of the big cities. Sure, the cities are still a bargain. Hostels cost less than $20 USD, food is $2-5 USD per meal, and local transportation in cities runs less than a dollar.
But, the country becomes even cheaper when you get off the beaten path and venture into the interior. This is where you’ll find the best travel deals and bargains! China still remains one of the best value places in the world and, with its massive size (it’s the 3rd largest country by landmass), there is a ton to see and do here!

Indonesia, $35/day
The thing about Indonesia is that it can be really cheap, or it can be quite expensive, depending on one big thing – transportation. Intercity traveling can be very time-consuming and costly, as is traveling from one island to another with a private boat. To save costs, stick with a region or two! There’s a lot to do and see, and spending more time in one place will only allow you to travel deeper and have a more meaningful experience anyway. If you want to travel far and wide on a budget, my biggest tip is to take the local transportation! That’s what I did when backpacking in Indonesia a few years back, and sure enough, I ended up with some funny stories.
On the flip side, food and drinks are cheap throughout the country, not to mention absolutely delicious too! Riding a scooter through the mountains costs very little, and so does hiking, chasing waterfalls, and slouching in a hammock by the beach all day long. Hostels are plentiful, social, and affordable, especially in places like the Gili Islands.
- Meals: $5 – $15 per day. Some hostels provide breakfast.
- Accommodation: -$15 per night in a hostel
- Transportation: -$15 for a motorbike for the day (prices may vary depending on the bike condition and your haggling skills)
- SIM card with data: $5 for 2GB with 30-day validity
Malaysia, $40/day
Being one of the most economically developed Southeast Asian countries, Malaysia is often perceived as expensive. On top of that, when I visited Malaysia for the first time, a few people told me it wasn’t worth staying long. However, I ended up meeting lots of locals, being more able to communicate and find more common ground with them than I had in Cambodia or Laos, and had so much fun exploring Cameron Highlands, the jungles of Borneo, and the gorgeous islands. The cherry on top? They were all affordable. An overnight bus from Kuala Lumpur to the Perhentian Islands costs as little as $15, there are so many interesting local neighborhoods and markets that are free to explore, and finally, the Malaysian cuisine is like no other – you can find food from just about any culture, and it’s so cheap and delicious – but not necessarily healthy. Malaysia is also one of the cheapest places in the world to get a PADI scuba diving certificate.
- Meals: $5 – $10 per day. Some hostels provide breakfast
- Accommodation: – $15 per night in a hostel
- Transportation: $5 – for a full day of train and bus rides, or $15 – $20 for an overnight intercity bus ride
- SIM card with data: for 2GB with 30-day validity
Northern Thailand, $32/day
The north of Thailand is easy on a tight budget. As one moves south, costs for accommodation start to double, triple, and even quadruple. Stay up north if you are short on time and budget for your Thailand trip. Even in popular places like Chiang Mai and Pai, you can easily find basic dorms for less than . If you stick with eating street food (To each her own, but why eat pasta when you can have pad Thai, am I right?), not only will you save yourself some money, but the experience will be much more authentic and delicious too. As far as activities go, you really do not need a lot of money to enjoy your day as most activities such as visiting the White Temple, hiking, or gathering three other people from your hostel to rent a car and go on some day trips, are all affordable.
- Meals: $5 – $15 per day. Some hostels provide breakfast
- Accommodation: $5-$10 per night in a hostel
- Transportation: -$10 for a motorbike for the day (prices may vary depending on the bike condition and your haggling skills) or a rental car split between 4 people
- SIM card with data: for 1.5GB with 30-day validity
Taiwan, $45/day
Two words: street food. For less than $2, you can get a plate of fragrant rice with pork/chicken on top, a large deep-fried chicken chop, or a bowl of delicious vermicelli with oysters. Food in Taiwan is delicious and ridiculously cheap. If you are a foodie on a budget, you know where to go! In cities like Taipei and Tainan, you can register for their city bikes, which cost less than $0.50 per hour per ride and are free for the first 30 minutes. This means you can possibly get around the city all day without spending any money on transportation at all.
That said, high-end food and clothing prices in Taiwan can sometimes be at US-level. Intercity traveling is either expensive with the High-Speed Rail (HSR) or time-consuming with slightly cheaper options. Internet is also not as cheap as in the countries above.
- Meals: $5 – $10 per day. Some hostels provide breakfast
- Accommodation: $10 – $35 per night in a hostel (I highly recommend this one in Taipei!) Keep in mind that Taiwan’s current COVID restrictions don’t allow travelers to stay in shared accommodations (i.e., hostel dorms) for the first 7 nights of their stay.
- Transportation: $0 – $3 for a full day of bike, bus, and train rides, or $20 – $40 for an HSR ride between cities
- SIM card with data: $33 for unlimited data with 28-day validity

Cheap guesthouses, budget street food (some as low as $1 USD), local buses, and many cheap and free attractions make it possible. While the islands and expensive accommodations can increase daily spending to around USD, Thailand remains one of the most budget-friendly destinations in the world.

However, if you have a bit more to spend, you can get a gorgeous room for closer to $35, which would easily cost $100 in the US.

15 Affordable Vacation Ideas in the U.S.
Don't worry about breaking the bank on a family vacation—we've got you covered with these 15 affordable vacation ideas in the U.S. Stick to your budget and enjoy a great trip without the stress. So, grab your favorite playlist, put on your shades, and start preparing with our travel checklist.
1. Explore Your Own City
When we say "tour your own city," we don't mean simply going to your usual Sunday restaurant and calling it a night. Be a tourist in your own town! Discover local art galleries, explore nearby trails, and try out new restaurants you've been meaning to visit. The best part about touring your own city is that it's easy to be thrifty and stay within your budget while having a great time.
2. Go Camping
Experience the great outdoors by going camping. You can choose to sleep in a tent or rent a cabin. Enjoy nature and all it has to offer. If you want an RV or camper experience without the hassle of driving one, consider booking a decked-out camper through Airbnb. Some hosts even deliver the camper to you, allowing you to have a cozy stay indoors.
3. Visit a Less Popular Beach
Save money on a beach vacation by choosing a beach that is less popular and more affordable. Avoid expensive destinations like Key West and Laguna Beach and discover hidden gems. Consider going off-season or visiting a beach close to your home. Gulf beaches are often cheaper than East or West Coast beaches, and they offer equally beautiful surroundings.
4. Book Travel Packages through Warehouse Stores
Warehouse stores like Costco offer great deals on vacation packages. If you're planning an elaborate vacation, consider exploring the options they have available. You can save a significant amount of money by booking through them rather than separately. Keep an eye out for these deals and take advantage of the savings.
5. Stay with Friends or Family
Staying with friends or family can be a cost-effective vacation idea. While it may not feel like a typical vacation, it allows you to spend time with loved ones without having to pay for lodging or some meals. Make sure to show your gratitude as a guest by contributing and treating your hosts.
6. Travel During the Off-Season
Consider traveling during the off-peak season to save money. Avoid peak travel times and holidays, and plan your trip for a less crowded time. Research the best off-season to visit your desired destination and take advantage of lower prices and fewer crowds.
7. Go on a Weekend Trip
If you need a break but can't take an extended vacation, plan a weekend getaway. It may not be as long or restful as a 10-day trip, but it can still be enjoyable and affordable. Set a budget for a quick weekend escape and discover nearby destinations that offer relaxation and fun.
8. Take a Vacation on a Weekday
Consider booking a vacation during the week instead of the weekend. Accommodations often offer lower rates during weekdays compared to weekends. If you have paid time off available, take advantage of it and plan a midweek vacation that fits your budget.
9. Visit a National Park
Explore the natural beauty of national parks in the United States. You don't have to live near famous parks like Yosemite or the Grand Canyon to enjoy nature. With 63 national parks across the country, there's likely one near your location. Take a trip to a national park, pay a small entrance fee, and embark on an adventure in the great outdoors.
10. Stay at a Bed-and-Breakfast Nearby
Consider staying at a budget-friendly bed-and-breakfast for a unique and affordable experience. Many bed-and-breakfasts offer inclusive rates that cover meals and activities. Look for deals and find a charming bed-and-breakfast in your desired location. Enjoy homemade breakfast and other extras provided by the establishment.
11. Get Insider Tips
If you're planning a trip to popular destinations like Disney World, gather insider tips to make the experience budget-friendly. Research online, ask friends and family for advice, and gather all the necessary information before booking your trip. With the right knowledge, you can enjoy a magical vacation without breaking the bank.
12. Explore Your Own Region
You don't have to travel far for an affordable vacation. Look for hidden gems within your own region. Take a short drive to a nearby town or city and explore places you've never been to before. It's a great way to get out of town, avoid busy tourist areas, and discover something new close to home.
13. Book in Advance
One of the best ways to secure good prices is by booking your trip in advance. While you don't have to plan years ahead, booking early increases your chances of getting affordable rates. Avoid waiting until the last month before your desired travel dates. If booking in advance isn't an option, check websites like Groupon and Expedia for last-minute deals. HotelTonight is also a great option for finding discounted hotel rooms when you need them.
14. Go on a Day Trip
Skip the cost of accommodations altogether by planning a day trip. Look for charming towns or interesting destinations near you and pack up the family for a fun day out. Budget for gas and activities, and consider packing your own food for a picnic. It's a cost-effective way to explore new places without the need for overnight stays.
15. Try a Home Swap
Consider doing a home swap with another family for an affordable staycation. This arrangement gives both families a chance to experience a new environment without the cost of accommodations. Make sure to leave their home in better condition than you found it and enjoy a unique "out of town" feeling during your stay.

With a well-established tourist trail, Thailand has been a popular backpacking destination for decades. You can comfortably get by on a daily budget of $25-35 USD thanks to affordable guesthouses, budget-friendly street food (some as cheap as $1 USD), local buses, and numerous cheap or free attractions. If you spend most of your time on the islands or prefer more expensive accommodations, expect to pay around USD per day. However, Thailand remains one of the most affordable destinations worldwide that you shouldn't miss out on.

San Juan, Puerto Rico
North America
It’s easier (and way more affordable) to visit Puerto Rico than you may think. Since this beautiful tropical island is part of the United States, you don’t have to pass through customs, exchange money or even bring a passport to visit. And once you arrive, there’s plenty of inexpensive entertainment, including some of the best all-inclusive resorts.
Puerto Rico is home to a bounty of stunning (and free!) beaches, especially in the main arrival city of San Juan, one of the best places in the U.S. for a cheap beach vacation. While in town, be sure to explore the historic architecture of Old San Juan and Castillo San Felipe del Morro, a citadel built between the 16th and 18th centuries. When you’re ready for lunch, try a tripleta, a popular (and massive) Puerto Rican sandwich of marinated meats that costs about at one of the city’s food trucks.
Although we’ve seen round-trip airfares for around $200 from the East Coast, it can be especially handy to use your points or credit card travel rewards to fly down to Puerto Rico. Hotels will cost most during peak winter and spring break periods. You’ll also want to avoid the late summer and early fall because of hurricane season. But weather during the rest of the year is downright beautiful.
Page, Arizona
North America
This desert spot takes the top spot when it comes to cheap places to travel, especially thanks to its affordable accommodations and stunning Arizona road trip scenery. The average price for a weekend hotel in this northern Arizona town is just per night, making it a solid fit if you’re looking for a budget vacation out West. The city also makes the perfect base to explore the natural wonders of the area, including the unique geology of Vermilion Cliffs National Park and Rainbow Bridge National Monument, both of which are inexpensive outdoor entertainment for your getaway.
Although Page has a regional airport, consider flying into Flagstaff, about a two-hour drive away, for more availability and lower airfare, averaging around $368 round trip. And avoid the summer months here, when the temperatures soar and the national parks are packed with vacationers. Spring and fall bring lower prices, better weather and fewer visitors.
Las Vegas, Nevada
North America
Flights to Las Vegas are affordable year-round from most regions, especially if you know the best travel tips. CheapAir.com recently listed Sin City as one of its top spots for culture, cuisine and adventure that you can visit without breaking the bank.
Dining and accommodation can be had for a song, even if you’re not a high roller, with five-star hotels offering rates just over $100. Depending on the time of year, airfare here tends to start at $160 round trip on budget airlines, such as Spirit, and you won’t even need a rental car during your stay, since there’s a free shuttle to take you up and down the Vegas strip.
Antigua, Guatemala
North America
If you’re looking for the next cool city in Central America, head to Antigua in Guatemala (not to be confused with Antigua, the tropical island in the Caribbean). This well-preserved colonial town also happens to be near an especially hot attraction—it’s surrounded by the Pacaya volcano. For as little as $22, you can have a local guide take you on a half-day walking tour of the volcano, complete with park entry fee, a water bottle and transportation to and from your hotel. Travelers who pack marshmallows and skewers can even roast them with the heat emanating from the volcano—now that’s a once-in-a-lifetime activity at one of the natural wonders of the world.
Hotels here run about $118 per night, and average airfare is about $340 round trip. November through March is the best time to visit to avoid the muddy wet season; however, you may pay a bit more to visit during this time. To get a deal and avoid the rain, try a visit just before November or after March, in the shoulder season.
Cape Town, South Africa
Africa
South Africa is without a doubt a bucket list destination and was named one of the best places to travel in 2023. But can it be affordable? We think so! If flying to South Africa has seemed too prohibitive to keep you from visiting the Rainbow Nation, think again. Recently, both Delta and United have introduced non-stop flights to the country, creating competition on the routes and in turn, making airfare cheaper than we’ve ever seen—especially in the off-peak seasons of late spring and late fall, when rates dip well below 0 round trip. After you arrive, the exchange rate of nearly 18 rand to the dollar means that most hotels can cost $100 or less. Gourmet restaurants and award-winning wines are also affordable at every budget.
Head to Table Mountain and overlook the city of Cape Town. Visit Robben Island and take in its rich multi-layered history. Explore the surrounding Cape Town Winelands, a beautiful region known for its exceptional vineyards, picturesque settings and history. And then take a day trip to Cape Point to see African penguins, zebra and other wildlife.
Toronto, Canada
North America
Cosmopolitan Toronto, one of the most popular destinations in Canada, is just a 90-minute trip from 60% of the United States, so it’s easy to reach for many vacationers. Plus, the U.S. dollar is strong against Canadian currency, so it will feel like the whole city is on sale. And according to Kayak, Toronto is one of the top cities for great hotel and airfare deals, with overnight stays averaging $202 a night and airfare about $375 round trip.
While you’re there, head to the top of the CN Tower to take in the amazing views. Then, head to the neighboring Ripley’s aquarium where you can ride the moving sidewalk through a shark tank. Both are included in the Toronto CityPASS, which features admission to five top attractions for a discounted rate and starts at just $56. The warmer months are peak season to visit Toronto, but they’re also when you can take advantage of the city’s most notable free attraction: the downtown beaches of one of the Great Lakes, Lake Ontario. Catch some summer rays here with the whole family.
Mexico City, Mexico
North America
While Mexico has a long list of popular travel destinations, we find this North American city to be a great bang for your buck. There are plenty of historical sites to see throughout the area, including a host of world-class museums and amazing art centers in Mexico City with inexpensive admission fees. Plus, the exchange rate is more than 18 pesos to $1.
Are you interested in some of the best Mexican all-inclusive resorts? With a pay-one-price model that includes your room, food, beverages and activities, all-inclusive lodging could be a budget-friendly option in Mexico. If you prefer to stay in standard hotels or Airbnbs, there are plenty of inexpensive lodging options in (and cheap flights to) Mexico City. Get ready for cost savings!
Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay
South America
A hidden gem in South America, Uruguay is just a quick jump from better-known tourist spots, such as Buenos Aires, but is much more low-key and laid back. The exchange rate, from Uruguayan pesos to U.S. dollars, is currently 26 to 1, so Americans will get great value for the dollar when they visit. In particular, the historic city of Colonia del Sacramento is a phenomenal place for history buffs to revel in relics of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The well-preserved urban landscape has landed the city on the World Heritage List, offering historic walking tours of the cobbled streets flanked with colorful homes, restaurants and shops. In the warmer seasons, residents throw block parties, at which you can enjoy homemade Uruguayan street food. And even if you’re dining at restaurants, an entire day of eating could cost you less than $10.
Lodging options range from small boutiques for about $50 per night to hotel chains, such as Sheraton, for around $160 per night. Round-trip flight prices tend to average about $540. And since the country is in the Southern Hemisphere, their summer high season is December through February, which makes it one of the best travel destinations during winter. If you want to get the best deals and pleasant weather, plan to visit in November or March.
Prague, Czech Republic
Europe
Prague, located in the Czech Republic, is one of the most beloved historical cities in Europe and is known for its charm and rich culture. It is also an affordable destination for travelers. The city is perfectly preserved, with bright red trolleys that cost only $1.35 for a ride, running on original cobblestone streets lined with beautiful stone buildings. Every corner you turn, you will discover a new and free attraction to enjoy, such as classic pubs where you can grab a pint of pilsner for around $2, or the medieval Charles Bridge adorned with stunning stone statues. Another highlight is the Prague Castle complex, which is at the heart of an entire castle district.
But Prague has more to offer beyond its city center. Venture into the breathtaking countryside for a budget-friendly day trip to explore the stunning wineries. Moreover, you can find affordable luxury accommodations in Prague, with options ranging from grand hotels to boutique hotels.

South America
Cartagena, Colombia, located on the Caribbean coast, is a romantic getaway known for its blend of heritage and sparkling ocean views. Taiwan, $45/day
Two words: street food. In Taiwan, you can indulge in fragrant rice with pork or chicken, mouthwatering deep-fried chicken chops, or delicious vermicelli with oysters, all for less than $2. The country offers a culinary experience like no other, especially for foodies on a budget. In cities like Taipei and Tainan, you can explore the city on affordable city bikes, costing less than $0.50 per hour per ride and even free for the first 30 minutes. This means you can easily get around the city without spending much on transportation.
However, it's worth noting that high-end food and clothing prices in Taiwan can be comparable to those in the US. Intercity travel can be expensive via the High-Speed Rail, but there are slightly cheaper options that take a bit more time. Internet prices are also not as low as in some other countries.
- Meals: $5 – $10 per day. Some hostels provide breakfast

Nepal, $30/day ($15/day if trekking)
Nepal offers incredibly affordable travel options, with affordable food, accommodation, and transportation available through local options. While street food in Nepal may not have the best reputation, you can easily find cheap and delicious meals in small local cafes. However, be cautious when booking accommodation online, as big corporations have taken over many local homestays and transformed them into boutique hotels and resorts. To experience a genuine local guesthouse, it's best to book the first couple of nights online and search for accommodations upon arrival.
If you choose to embark on a trekking adventure, you can travel for as little as $10 per day on food and accommodation at lower elevations and around $20 USD at higher elevations, such as the popular Annapurna Circuit (excluding the expensive Mount Everest climb).
- Meals: $5 – $10 per day. Some hostels provide breakfast.
- Accommodation: -$12 per night in a local guesthouse.
- Transportation: $10-$15 per person for a private car and driver split between 4 people, or a local bus ride between cities.
- SIM card with data: $3 for 1.25GB with 30-day validity. Yes, it's that cheap!

Sri Lanka, $35/day
Sri Lanka offers a mix of affordability and splendor. While the country can be seen on a backpacker's budget, certain activities such as safaris and admission to UNESCO World Heritage sites can be pricey, averaging around $40-$50 per ticket. However, you can still explore Sri Lanka on a daily budget of around $30 on days without expensive activities. Food, transportation, accommodation, and internet services are relatively cheap. When it comes to transportation, taxis or Uber rides within major cities can often be more cost-effective than renting a bike. By hiring a driver for the day and splitting the cost with fellow hostel guests, you can enjoy private transportation for as low as $5 per person. For the most affordable transportation, the train system offers delightful journeys and is the recommended way to travel through Sri Lanka.
Disclaimer: In 2022, Sri Lanka experienced significant unrest. As of the publishing of this post, the country is still under a level 2 advisory (exercise increased caution) from the US State Department.
- Meals: $5 – $10 per day. Some hostels provide breakfast.

Malaysia, $40/day
Despite being one of Southeast Asia's most economically developed countries, Malaysia can still be an affordable travel destination. When I visited Malaysia for the first time, I discovered that it offered more than I had anticipated. I was able to connect and communicate with locals on a deeper level compared to my experiences in Cambodia or Laos. Exploring destinations like Cameron Highlands, Borneo's jungles, and the stunning islands was not only thrilling but also affordable. For instance, an overnight bus ride from Kuala Lumpur to the Perhentian Islands costs as little as $15. Malaysia also boasts a diverse culinary scene, offering a fusion of flavors from various cultures at incredibly low prices. Additionally, Malaysia is one of the most cost-effective places in the world to obtain a PADI scuba diving certificate.
Alcohol, on the other hand, may be relatively expensive in Malaysia due to high taxes. However, if you aren't planning on indulging in nightly drinks, this shouldn't be a significant concern.
- Meals: $5 – $10 per day. Some hostels provide breakfast.
- Accommodation: – $15 per night in a hostel.
- Transportation: $5 – for a full day of train and bus rides, or $15 – $20 for an overnight intercity bus ride.
- SIM card with data: for 2GB with 30-day validity.
The Philippines, $37/day
The Philippines is an archipelago that can be both time-consuming and expensive to explore due to travel distance and limited hostel options. However, there are ways to keep costs low while still enjoying the beauty of the country. By traveling during shoulder seasons, planning flights and itineraries well in advance, and focusing on 1-2 regions, you can still experience the Philippines on a budget. The country offers stunning islands, breathtaking dive sites, and hidden gems that otherwise would require a significant investment in other parts of the world. In this sense, spending your pesos in the Philippines is truly worthwhile.
- Meals: $5 – $15 per day. Some hostels provide breakfast.
- Accommodation: -$20 per night in a hostel.
- Transportation: $10-$15 for a motorbike rental for the day or $15 – $20 for a boat ride between islands.

Indonesia: $35/day
When it comes to Indonesia, the cost of traveling can vary greatly depending on one major factor – transportation. Traveling between cities or from one island to another can be both time-consuming and expensive, especially with private boats. To save money, it's best to stick to a specific region or two. This way, you can fully immerse yourself in the local culture and have a more meaningful experience. If you're on a budget and want to explore far and wide, taking local transportation is the way to go. I did this when I backpacked through Indonesia a few years ago, and it led to some memorable adventures.
On the bright side, food and drinks are cheap throughout the country and incredibly delicious. Exploring the mountains on a scooter or hiking doesn't cost much, and you can spend the whole day relaxing on the beach. Hostels are plentiful, affordable, and offer a social atmosphere, particularly in places like the Gili Islands.
Northern Thailand: $32/day
Northern Thailand is a great destination for budget travelers. As you move south, accommodation costs start to rise. So, if you're short on time and money, it's best to stay in the north. Even in popular places like Chiang Mai and Pai, you can easily find affordable dorms for less than . By sticking to street food, not only will you save money, but you'll also have a more authentic and delicious experience. Most activities, such as visiting the White Temple or going on day trips, are affordable and don't require a lot of money.
- Meals: $5 – $15 per day. Some hostels provide breakfast.
- Accommodation: $5-$10 per night in a hostel
- Transportation: -$10 for a motorbike for the day (prices may vary depending on the bike condition and your haggling skills) or a rental car split between 4 people

The cities can be overwhelming at times, but the tranquility of the desert and its breathtaking landscapes make the journey worthwhile.
I fell in love with Morocco when I visited, and not just because it's affordable. Budget backpackers can easily get by on $30-40 USD per day, while midrange travelers can have a comfortable trip for less than half of that. You get a lot of value for your money here. In fact, we even run tours in Morocco because we love it so much!
Morocco is truly a mesmerizing country. Don't miss out on the experience.
