Information for those planning a trip to Hawaii in the year 2023 but concerned about cost.
Many would agree that the words "Hawaii" and "budget" should never be used together. After all, a trip to a stunning tropical paradise should cost a pretty penny, right?
We're here to dispel the myth that only the wealthy can enjoy a trip to Hawaii, and to show you that a trip to Hawaii on a budget can be just as enjoyable, if not more so, than what you see in the brochures From cheap flights to cheap hotels to cheap tours, there are countless ways to enjoy Hawaii without breaking the bank. The best advice we have for reducing the cost of a trip to Hawaii is below.
Finding the most affordable method of travel to Hawaii

Making economical preparations for a trip to Hawaii Never blow it before you even set foot on the beach. There are a plethora of options for finding cheap flights to Hawaii if you're coming from the continental United States. For insider information on how to visit Hawaii without breaking the bank, keep reading!
First, if at all possible, be adaptable with your arrival/departure dates and island selection. The two largest expenses on a trip to Hawaii are airfare and lodging, so finding a happy medium between the two is essential. Second, think carefully about how you'll pay for the plane tickets, either with cash or frequent flyer points. Some tips for finding cheap flights to the Aloha State:
Locate the most affordable air fare that accepts cash as payment.
Paying cash for a plane ticket is the easiest option, and with the great deals often available from the west coast of the United States, it may be the best option overall. Use Skyscanner as your first point of call.
Skyscanner is our go-to flight search engine because it accurately reflects our adaptability, allowing us to include nearby airports on both ends and searching across multiple months to find the cheapest possible fare. Knowing the market price of a flight is useful information to have regardless of whether or not you plan to pay cash for your trip or redeem an award.
Keep an eye out for sales.

Southwest finally began flying to Hawaii in the early part of 2019. From certain airports, one-way introductory fares were as low as $49. Companion Pass was also accepted. Now prices are stable at higher levels, though they're cheaper than those offered by many major airlines. If you're looking for a cheap way to fly with a friend or family member, the Southwest Companion Pass is a fantastic option that only requires you to pay taxes. Opening a Southwest credit card is the quickest way to earn your companion pass, and you can earn it even more quickly by opening two cards (one for personal use and one for business).
The catch is that they only fly nonstop from California, Phoenix, and Las Vegas to Hawaii, with the most extensive service to Oahu in Maui, so if you don't live on the West Coast, you'll have to take a connecting flight. Flights to Kauai and the Big Island of Hawaii depart from a number of cities in the United States. There are also flights between the islands, though you should check with domestic airline Mokulele Airlines for the best deal.
To that end, I recently signed up for two Southwest credit cards in preparation for a return trip to Hawaii because of the incredible value of the Companion Pass. I'm glad to know that the fee is only $5. 60 dollars if I want to bring along a relative For information on current Southwest credit card offers that could net you a Companion Pass, click here.
Many frequent fliers are familiar with Southwest's Companion Pass, which can be earned through credit card sign up bonuses, but few are aware that Alaska Airlines offers an identical perk. However, Alaska Airlines offers many flights to Hawaii and has a slightly different companion ticket policy (only one per year at per companion ticket plus taxes, though the base fare is often waived in the first year with promotions).
You can buy any regular ticket on the website and use the companion fare on a second one; this isn't one of those tricks where you have to pay an outrageous price for the first ticket in order to use the companion fare on the second one (like some old Amex promotions). This could be one of the least expensive ways to visit Hawaii, especially for those on the West Coast who can easily find cheap flights to the Aloha State.
Redeem your miles and save on your flight.

The obvious way to avoid spending money on a trip to Hawaii is to not go. This is the first tip you'll probably give your friends who are interested in visiting Hawaii but are on a tighter budget. We've taken advantage of the "free" option many times because it's the most cost-effective way to reach Hawaii.
While 2 cents per mile is a good goal to shoot for, you may find that you can justify even lower redemption values. If you really don't want to pay cash, 5 cents per mile will get you there (after all, four plane tickets to pretty much anywhere will cost you a minimum of a thousand dollars). Despite the fact that many airlines now offer dynamic (= more expensive) point redemptions, as of October 2022 (economy class for us, folks), the following are the major airlines' baseline award redemptions for flights from the continental United States to Hawaii:
In peak season, American Airlines carries 45,000 passengers.
Fifty thousand dollars for United Airlines
45,000 for Delta Air Lines
40,00 for Alaska Airlines
There are 26,000 passengers on British Airways' west coast routes and 51,500 on AA's east coast routes.
The above pie chart clearly demonstrates the optimal time to redeem airline miles for Hawaii vacations. Oftentimes, Alaska Airlines and even British Airways offer much better prices than the major US airlines. Due to British Airways' distance-based award chart, round-trip tickets for customers flying in from the West Coast only cost 26,000 miles, while those flying in from the East Coast would cost a whopping 51,500 miles.
Just how does an American amass enough British Airways Avios points to fly first class? It's easy: just sign up for the Chase Sapphire Reserve or the Chase Ink Business Preferred card, and then transfer the sign-up bonus to your Executive Club account right away. Simply log in to your BA account and redeem your tickets. In October 2022, the Sapphire Reserve's sign-up bonus will be 80,000 points, and the Ink Business Preferred's sign-up bonus will be 100,000 points, which is nearly enough to fly a family of four to Hawaii and back from the West Coast. If you want to expand your award-travel options as we have, you can also get both cards.
US residents who had a Virgin America Mileage Plan account prior to the airline's purchase by Alaska may have more miles than they realize. Our combined miles totaled almost exactly 15,000, so we were able to use those that had been dormant in our accounts for a few years to buy one-way tickets. Score
With the above-mentioned Companion Pass and Southwest's fare-based frequent flyer redemption, you can get two tickets to Hawaii for the same number of miles as it would take to get one ticket. There is no better way to get to Hawaii for a reasonable price, and their low fare calendar is a fantastic resource for figuring out when that might be. To begin earning your Companion Pass, submit an application for a Southwest Airlines credit card.
In a city with many United flights, the United Mileage Plus Explorer Credit Card could be the most convenient way to rack up frequent flyer miles. It costs per year (though as of this update, the first year's cost is covered), and you get 70,000 bonus miles in addition to that, which is more than enough to pay for your plane ticket. We like that you get two passes to the United Club lounge and free checked bags whenever you use the card, even if you're just paying taxes on an award ticket redemption. We always have this card on hand and use it when booking flights with United.
You can cash in your Chase Ultimate Rewards points here.
Want to know how to save money on a trip to Hawaii? One last way to save money on Hawaii airline tickets is the same way we got three of our four tickets: by purchasing them all in one go. Our Sapphire Reserve and Ink Business Preferred cards have helped us amass a large number of Chase Ultimate Rewards points, and we've taken advantage of this flexibility on occasion to pay for our tickets.
The flexibility of using Ultimate Rewards points for almost any travel expense through the portal at a 1 to 1 redemption rate is one of the program's best features. You can get 25 cents for every point with most Chase cards and 1 If you have a Sapphire Reserve card from Chase, you'll get 5 cents per point (regardless of where the points were originally earned).
In our case, individual Alaska Airlines tickets cost $445 when paid for in cash, so we needed to redeem almost precisely 30,000 points per person. Though our Ultimate Rewards points wouldn't transfer to Alaska Airlines, we paid nothing (not even taxes) when we booked through the portal. Sweet as can be

Affordable lodging options in Hawaii

With any luck, you weren't out too much money getting to Hawaii. The other major expense of a trip to Hawaii is lodging. A home exchange may be the best option for those who want to visit Hawaii on a tight budget.
Look at this map for some (slightly) less expensive choices:
Hawaii Vacation Rentals
It's important to know what you're getting into when considering a vacation rental as a lodging option in Hawaii. Oahu's Airbnb market was effectively stifled outside of Waikiki, Ko Olina, and Turtle Bay when Honolulu's mayor enacted stringent limits on unhosted short-term vacation rentals in June 2019. The new rules are even stricter.
There will still be some vacation rentals available in other areas, though supply will be limited and licensing will be required. Furthermore, short-term rentals are restricted in other parts of Hawaii. Check listings thoroughly before booking a vacation rental as they can be a great way to save money in Hawaii.
Finding a great legal rental in Hawaii can be a fantastic option for a vacation. Enjoy a new atmosphere while saving money on groceries, parking, and more!
The term "cheap" is relative and can mean different things on different islands, but here are some great options to consider on each:
The Best Hawaii Hotels
Do you want to go to Hawaii and just stay in a hotel? Even if you're trying to keep your Hawaii vacation on a tight budget, you'll have plenty of options to pick from. Look for accommodations that include a kitchen so you can cook your own meals and a laundry so you don't have to pay for those extra expenses. You'll still have access to the resort's enticing pools, delectable dining options, and professional staff. These are some of the best places to eat and stay on each island:

The Hale Koa Hotel on Waikiki Beach is a great place to stay if you or a loved one are in the United States armed forces. This relatively simple hotel is a "thank you" to service members by offering a prime location and convenient services at a fraction of the cost of nearby five-star establishments. Those in the armed forces who are interested in learning more about how they can affordably travel to Hawaii can do so by reading the information provided here.
Home Swap in the Aloha State
We love home exchange for many reasons, but there are a few that are particularly helpful when trying to figure out how to take the family to Hawaii without breaking the bank.
A home exchange in Hawaii can save you money compared to a hotel stay for a few reasons.
Second, if you have a real house with a kitchen, you can save money by not eating at restaurants (which are notoriously expensive in Hawaii).
Third, being away from the main tourist areas means almost everything will be less expensive (not to mention less crowded) – groceries are cheaper, our Home Exchange house on Oahu had its own parking and the house even came stocked with boogie boards and snorkel gear so that we didn’t have to rent
Doing a house swap in Hawaii had incredible advantages beyond the financial ones. Ample room for all to spread out was provided. Inside, we had our very own laundry rooms. Instead of the overcrowded beaches frequented by tourists, we hung out at places restricted to locals. We were able to store all of our groceries from Costco in a separate refrigerator. Oh, and there was plenty of room for both grandmothers to join us for a few weeks of leisurely sightseeing on Oahu. You can find more advice on how to organize a family vacation here.
RVing and tenting in Hawaii
Camping in Hawaii is an additional option for those on a tight budget. Camping spots on each island are beautiful and scenic, though facilities vary greatly. Here's a great compilation of camping options on Kauai.
Renting an RV in Hawaii is a convenient option for those who wish to combine travel and lodging. Each island has a wealth of stunning campgrounds, and camping there is cheaper than using a car rental service and staying in a hotel.
Finding an affordable rental car in Hawaii

It appears that, like many other things in Hawaii, car rental rates in the islands are higher than those on the mainland. Staying in the heart of the tourist action in places like Honolulu and Waikiki means you can get by without a car: you can walk to the beaches, mini marts, and restaurants that cater to tourists, and you can rely on hotel concierges to book excursions to other parts of the island that include transportation. Some destinations on Oahu are accessible via bus, but the process can be lengthy.
Find out the top ten considerations before booking a car rental in Hawaii by reading on!
Since all of those little (or big) premiums only affect one traveler, it may be more cost-effective for a solo traveler to stay in a city and avoid renting a car while in Hawaii. When traveling as a family or in a pair, you will save enough money elsewhere to more than cover the cost of renting a car. You'll also be able to visit serene and stunning locations that are off the beaten path for most visitors. Not only that, but a car is a necessity in many areas of Hawaii.
Bring the young ones Bringing your own car seats can help you save money on your rental. Learn the top tips by clicking here.
Getting a good rate on a rental car in Hawaii (or anywhere else) is easy if you use one of our go-to websites. The easiest option is always reliable old RentalCars.com. You can find the car you want quickly from a wide variety of providers of varying sizes, and book it with no deposit required. Almost any booking can be canceled, so we always check back a week or so before departure to see if we can find a better rate, and often end up doing just that.
When searching for a rental car through Kayak, you'll be able to choose from a wide variety of providers, including both well-known names and some smaller businesses that may be a better value during the current rental car price crisis. To see what tickets cost on the dates you're interested in, click here.
Discount Hawaii Car Rental is a great local rental service. They partner with every major car rental agency in Hawaii, and if there is ever an issue, you can reach out to their Hawaii-based support staff. This is especially useful if you are arriving on the mainland late in the day.
The cost of our rental car during our five-week vacation in Hawaii was the single highest expense we incurred. For the same price, we could have rented two compact cars for the five weeks of our trip and a minivan for the week and a half in the middle when we picked up some grandmas.
The minivan was expensive at $1600 for the five weeks, but it came in handy when we needed to transport a lot of boogie boards, beach towels, and cases of food from Costco (more on that later). A larger size may be preferable if you intend to make frequent trips to Costco and transport heavy loads of beach gear. We were quoted just under $500 for a 10-day rental of a midsize car. Short-term car rental rates may be significantly higher due to post-pandemic supply shortages.
Where can I find the most convenient gas station in Hawaii? Typically, people go to Costco. Honest to God, People The last time we filled up, gas was 70 cents cheaper at Costco than at nearby gas stations, on average. You'll be saving more than $10 per fill-up. It's worth checking out Safeway and Sam's Club on the way by to compare gas prices if you're waiting in a long line at Costco; they've been competing by lowering their prices. The best way I've found to compare gas prices in Hawaii is to visit the website for each Costco warehouse and expand the "Gas Station" section to see hours and the current price. (It's important to keep in mind that the Costco in Hawaii Kai does not sell gas, but all the others in the state do.) )

Cost-effective Hawaii vacation packages
You can save money on a trip to Hawaii by purchasing a vacation package if you prefer to travel with minimal planning hassle. For our first trip to Hawaii, we did just that.
Make sure that the total cost of the package, including airfare, hotel, and activities, is less than the cost of booking these items separately. Ours was a Black Friday special booking, so we got a great deal.
Some excellent resources for finding cheap Hawaii vacation packages are listed below.
Hawai'ian food budgeting strategies

Vacationing in Hawaii on a tight budget requires some creative meal planning. Food in Hawaii can cost anywhere from a few cents to a few dollars more than it would on the mainland because of the high cost of shipping per item. One of the keys to a frugal trip to Hawaii is figuring out what you'll eat ahead of time.
Booking a vacation rental with a kitchen and cooking your own meals is the best way to save money on food in Hawaii. Even if you intend to prepare all of your meals at your temporary residence, you will still need to exercise restraint when shopping for food. Since it can be difficult to budget for groceries in Hawaii, we've done some research and come up with a few suggestions to help you out.
Let's start with a chat about Costco. Costco in Hawaii can be very affordable if you already have a membership and you're traveling there with a small group of people. Compared to local grocery stores, prices for perishables like dairy, eggs, and meat are significantly lower, and the prices are nearly on par with those at Costco on the mainland. On the island of Oahu alone, you can find four of Hawaii's seven Costcos.
Beach towels, Hawaiian shirts, and other necessities can be found in this store, along with the usual fare. Eat at Costco; you won't need a membership and you can feed your whole family for less than $10. It's not something you should do on a daily basis, but if you live in Hawaii and go to Costco once every week or two, it's a great way to save some money without having to give up convenience food.
If you know someone with a Costco membership but don't have one yourself, you can ask for Costco Cash cards (gift cards) on their behalf. You don't have to be a member to use these.
Having said that, you should probably think about whether or not you'll be able to finish a 20-pound bag of rice while on vacation before signing up for a Costco membership just to save money on your Hawaii vacation. Also, where are you going to put all that food? What if you only have a short amount of time in Hawaii, or if you can't bring your entire football team? Shoot for the Moon
The big red target of value has arrived in the land of the blessed. We have stores on Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island, and we carry all your mainland favorites, as well as some Aloha Shop exclusives. It's possible that Target is the best place to stock up on food in Hawaii, as it sells both generic and name-brand items. Walmart, if that's your preferred shopping destination, has a ton of locations on Oahu but only a handful on the other islands.
Prices may seem a bit higher than what you'd pay on the mainland, but have no fear; both establishments promise to meet or beat competitors' prices. Just show the cashier the lower price for the item you want on your phone, whether it's from the store's website or another major website. By doing so, I was able to save 20% on our sunscreen. When it comes to finding cheap flights to Hawaii, Target is your best bet.
Foodland is yet another nearby supermarket. Some things (like dairy and eggs) were much more expensive than we found at Costco, but we were able to find many other things that were only slightly more expensive than at our local grocery stores on the mainland. We heard that many locals go to Foodland for their own poke fixes, so be sure to sign up for their Maika'i card for extra discounts and check out the poke counter in the back of the store.
Travel deals to Hawaii

One of the best parts of a trip to the Aloha State is that visitors can enjoy many of its unique attractions without spending a dime. You don't have to pay anything to enjoy yourself on the beach, at a waterfall, on a scenic drive, or at a hula performance.
It's true that we've had many days in Hawaii where we didn't spend any money at all (other than on shave ice, but that's another story). However, what about extremely expensive events? Can you still do them if you're on a tighter budget in Hawaii? Here are some suggestions for how to enjoy those one-of-a-kind events without going into serious debt.
Ten Oahu Attractions That Won't Cost You a Dime to Enjoy
The Go Oahu Card
Smart Destinations' Go Oahu Card combines discounts at top attractions across the island into one convenient package. All-Inclusive and Create Your Own are the two available plans.
You can do as many of these things as you can fit into your schedule with their All-Inclusive pass, for which you pay a flat rate based on the number of days you wish to use the card (which can be spread over a two-week period). Activities range from luaus to catamaran snorkeling trips to hikes to movie tours, and many of them provide free transportation from Waikiki in the event that you don't have a car.
You can get 1, 2, 3, 5, or 7 day cards, and if you stay for three days or longer, you get to pick one "premium" activity like a luau, sunset dinner sail, snorkeling with wild sea turtles, or a semi-private surfing lesson.
We recommend the 3-day card ($219 for adults, $189 for children) for a weeklong stay on Oahu. Why We'll take you to the Polynesian Cultural Center and other fantastic attractions, and you'll also get to pick one additional, high-end experience, like a snorkel boat tour, at no extra cost. Easily get your money's worth out of the 3-day card because there are many other high-value activities included for the other two days.

Book of Amusements

When we were kids in the 1980s, our families would buy the Entertainment Book as a fundraiser. It's safe to assume that they persist And on several islands in Hawaii, you can find some pretty good deals.
Most coupons in the Entertainment Book are the "two for one" variety. Coupons for great activities and sights, such as the Pacific Aviation Museum at Pearl Harbor, the Bishop Museum, snorkeling tours, kayak rentals from Twogood Kayaks, and more, can be found alongside those for many different restaurants. A single or double day of use in Hawaii will more than cover the cost of the pass. For the convenience of instant access to all the discounts, you can even opt for a digital book.
The Hawaii Entertainment Book is where you can find the best discounts in Hawaii.

Entry to Hawaii's National Parks
With your America the Beautiful annual pass, you can gain free entry to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island and Haleakal on Maui. An annual pass to most federally managed parks and forests costs just . It only takes three or four uses (or even two if you frequently visit popular/expensive parks) for it to cover its cost. You can get your pass right now.
Purchasing Items as a Gift Look at these wonderful National Park-themed presents.
In contrast to traditional discount vouchers, such as those offered by Groupon and
Daily deal websites like Groupon and Living Social are also great ways to save money in Hawaii. Deals can be found on a variety of water activities such as sailing, parasailing, and chopper rides. Groupon should be your first stop if you're looking for cheap fun in Hawaii. Look at these amazing discounts!
Put your memberships to good use.

Access to low-cost or even free entertainment might be as close as your wallet. Check to see if AAA members receive a discount when making travel plans.
And if your home country has a science center that is part of the ASTC Passport program, you can get in free to the fantastic Bishop Museum in Honolulu by showing your card. We used it twice (both times for nothing) ) to the extent that they considered coming back for a third trip You can't beat it if you're looking for a cheap way to entertain kids while on vacation in Hawaii.
Special pricing for the armed forces
The United States has nearly 50,000 military personnel and dependents in Hawaii (population: about 1 5 million) Military families on vacation in Hawaii can receive discounts to many attractions throughout the state. There are four commissaries on Oahu, and there is also an exchange where you can buy discounted gifts at a discount. I appreciate your service very much.
Shouldn't you be island-hopping Will that work for a trip to Hawaii on a limited budget?
Regarding the most cost-effective way to explore the Hawaiian islands, there are two schools of thought:
The first camp, the "pro island hopping" side, points out that flights from the US mainland to Hawaii are lengthy and expensive. If you want to save money on airfare, it's best to fly to Hawaii only once and then hop around to the various islands. If you're visiting Hawaii from the East Coast or if this trip is a once-in-a-lifetime treat for you, you should plan accordingly. If you need to check a bag and are traveling between Hawaiian islands, your best bet is to look for a deal on Southwest and use your companion pass.
The second school of thought is the "anti island hopping camp," which maintains that visitors to Hawaii who are watching their pennies are better off staying put. The weekly rental rate is offered by many vacation homes. You can save a lot of money by renting a car for a full week instead of just a few days.
Visiting multiple islands at once You'll either have to eat out every meal or buy very expensive food in very small quantities, only to have to buy them again at your next destination.
Plus, there is usually a fee of around per person to travel from one island to another. Open-jaw bookings (where you enter and exit from different islands on the same trip) are one way to cut down on the number of legs required, but you should still compare the cost to that of two separate round-trips: one within the same island chain and another between them.
In what category do we reside Relax and take in the aloha spirit on each island as you visit them. When you're ready to come back to Hawaii, it will be there for you. Only if you've already been to a few islands and are hoping to see another, but flights aren't readily available, should you consider driving. Since we now reside in the Midwest, we're thinking it might be more convenient to make a stop on Oahu or Maui en route to Kauai due to the island's lower number of incoming flights from the mainland.
Advice for families on how to vacation in Hawaii on a tighter budget
Some of the suggestions we've made so far will be very useful if you're trying to plan a cheap Hawaii vacation for your family. Just to recap quickly:
- Check for airline discounts on companion tickets.
- If you want to take advantage of Costco's Hawaii location, it's best to book a vacation rental that includes a kitchen and a fridge that can hold your groceries.
- Instead of bringing in packaged food from the mainland, try to get your children to eat more fresh, local food (a box of cereal is fine if they really can't stand anything else).
- Avoid the added cost of a car seat by bringing your own when renting a car.
- If you already have a membership to a science museum at home, you can use it to get in free at the Bishop Museum.
- If at all possible, schedule your visit outside of school holidays.
Affording Hawaii: Frequently Asked Questions
Price ranges are extremely diverse due to factors such as origin and mode of transportation. In 2022, domestic airfare to Hawaii will run you around $400 - $1200 per person. It costs $150-0 per night to stay at a hotel or Airbnb. The cost of food varies widely, but if you plan on eating out for every meal, plan on spending at least $40 per person, per day. Unfortunately, even so-called "cheap trips to Hawaii" aren't particularly inexpensive when compared to other budget destinations.
Staying in Waikiki can eliminate the need for a rental car, which can significantly reduce the cost of visiting Oahu. Since it is one of the Big Island's less frequented tourist destinations, Hilo provides excellent value for visitors. The Big Island of Hawaii is, all things considered, the least expensive of the Hawaiian Islands.
Outside of summer and winter breaks, we've found the best prices to be year-round. The fall season in Hawaii is the low season for tourists. Avoiding the end of winter break and the long weekends during the season can make flights in January and February cheaper, too.
From the west coast, you can often find good deals if you book your flight a week or two before departure and during the off season. During peak travel times or if departing from the East Coast, you'll get the best prices on airfare if you purchase your ticket several months in advance.
