Guide to Visiting Tulum
Tulum is a bohemian utopia full of beautifully crafted hotels, spiritual centers, and eateries that nail both atmosphere and fare. All these wonderful things have come to Tulum, of course, because of the city's awe-inspiring Mayan ruins, which look out over the clear waters of the turquoise Caribbean. Tulum's spiritual scene is unparalleled, humming peacefully in the background of the bustling beach clubs and posing influencers with its wide range of yoga and meditation classes, as well as its sacred cacao ceremonies and other mind-expanding rituals. Aside from all this, there is a lush jungle full of cenotes and beautiful nature reserves where you can go dolphin-watching, cave diving, or even ride an ATV.
The rising cost of travel to this once sleepy fishing village has made Tulum one of Mexico's most popular tourist destinations, but the town of Tulum offers much more than the current hotspot. The natural beauty of Tulum has always been a draw, but with a little insider knowledge, you can also find authentic cultural experiences, make a real connection to your spiritual side, and find inspiration there.
It's the same as Eastern Standard Time, but no one bothers with Daylight Savings. From the months of April through October, Tulum will be experiencing an hour of daylight savings time.
Even though Tulum's typically hot and humid winter months are some of the most pleasant times to visit, hotel prices can reach exorbitant heights during the weeks leading up to Christmas and New Year's. Tulum is susceptible to the sargasso seaweed problem, which affects much of the Caribbean. The seaweed that washes up on the shore is typically raked away by midday, but during the months of May through October, the amounts can become overwhelming. Therefore, late October through mid-December is the ideal time to visit Tulum. That buys you some breathing room to shop around for better rates and steer clear of the seaweed.
If you have the luxury of choosing when you go on vacation each month, you might want to take the lunar cycle into account. At the time of the full moon, Tulum's many temples and nightclubs throw special events for revelers to enjoy a night of dancing on the beach or a night of spiritual purification deep in the jungle.

Tulum has an abundance of taxis, but they are also the most expensive mode of transportation in the city. Depending on the time of day and where you're coming from, the price of a taxi ride can range from as low as $20 to as high as $50. A taxi ride from the downtown area to the beach should cost at least 250 pesos ($13 USD), and on busy nights it could cost as much as 600 pesos ($30 USD) Unless you and the driver have already agreed on a price, you shouldn't get in the car.
Bicycles: With the city's central plaza and the beach road connected by a bike path, bicycling has become a popular mode of transportation throughout Tulum's many neighborhoods. Bicycles can be rented from a variety of sources, including hotels and specialty shops like Ola Bike Tulum.
If you don't want to break a sweat but still want to see more of Tulum quickly, renting a scooter is a fantastic option. You can use it to get to cenotes and other attractions on the outskirts of town that would be difficult to reach by bicycle. The city's core is teeming with scooter retailers, where you can shop around and find the best prices. Rental fees for a single day typically start at 600 pesos, or about $30 USD.

Tulum's best hotels, restaurants, and beach clubs can be found in the Beach Zone, which is divided into a northern and southern section by a major thoroughfare. Without being a guest or paying customer, this makes it a little more challenging to access the beach.

The best time to visit Tulum is during the winter when the days are warm and sunny and the nights are cool. Average highs in Tulum range from 80 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. In some places, the rainy season doesn't start until May, so you can still enjoy a warm and dry spring. The rainy season doesn't let up until the end of summer, so the already oppressive heat and humidity won't let up until then. September marks the beginning of fall, when temperatures and precipitation probabilities begin to drop and the weather improves once more before winter. Tropical storms of any size are more likely to occur between July and November, though hurricanes rarely make landfall in Tulum.
