Choosing the Ideal Time to Visit Greece

Are you in the process of planning your next vacation and wondering when would be the best time to visit Greece? Let me assist you in making that decision!

Having lived in Greece for eight years and written extensively about the country, I have traveled all over Greece during various months and seasons. Through my experiences, I have come to appreciate the "shoulder season" months when the weather is still amazing, but there are fewer tourists.

Personally, I have found that the months of June and September are the best for traveling in Greece. The weather is delightful (not too hot!) and the number of tourists is significantly reduced.

However, it is important to note that August is the most popular month for travel to Greece. Nonetheless, popularity doesn't necessarily mean it is the best time to visit. The choice ultimately depends on what you're looking for.

The Best Time for Greek Island Hopping

The summer months and early autumn are the prime time for traveling between the Greek islands. During this period, the availability of ferry services increases to meet the demand, making it easier to navigate from one island to another.

If you're planning to explore the Cyclades, the Mediterranean Sea is typically warm enough for comfortable swimming starting from mid-June. Early summer can be an ideal time for beach vacations.

Moreover, many Greek islands have limited tourist facilities outside of the summer season. In fact, it's common for residents of smaller islands to spend their winters in Athens. If you're interested in visiting earlier, I recommend reading my article on the best Greek islands in May.

If you're considering Greek island hopping or incorporating a few Greek islands into your travel itinerary, be sure to check out my Greek island hopping guide. This guide provides practical information, as well as tips on how to account for possible ferry delays and strikes.

The Optimal Time to Visit Greece for Weather

From May to mid-October, Greece experiences plenty of sunny weather. The hottest months are July and August. If you happen to encounter rain during these months, consider yourself fortunate, as it is a rarity, especially on the southern islands.

Speaking of rare weather phenomena, it's important to keep in mind the "Meltemi winds." These dry and surprisingly strong winds blow in from the north Aegean Sea between mid-May and mid-September. It's difficult to predict when they will occur, as they simply arrive and persist for 3-4 days before subsiding.

On the bright side, if you're into windsurfing or seeking respite from the heat, the Meltemi winds can be advantageous. However, they can be less conducive to beach relaxation if they happen to blow in the wrong direction. If you encounter these winds during your holiday on a Greek island, ask the locals if they know of any sheltered beaches.

The Ideal Time to Travel to Greece for Cycling

I am personally on a mission to encourage more people to explore Greece on two wheels! Although Greece may lack advanced cycling infrastructure, its diverse landscapes make up for it. Check out my recent Hercules Bike Tour of the Peloponnese to see what I mean!

If you're planning a cycling trip in Greece, the best months to consider are May, June, September, and October. These months provide warm weather with a lower chance of rain.

I made the mistake of cycling in Greece during August last year, and it was scorching hot. The temperature reached above 36 degrees Celsius most days. Learn from my experience and avoid cycling during the peak heat!

The Optimum Time to Visit Greece for Sightseeing

In my experience, exploring Greece's remarkable archaeological sites is much easier and more enjoyable in cooler weather rather than the scorching heat.

Considering this, I recommend the months of May, June, September, and October as the best time for sightseeing at ancient sites in Greece.

If you're particularly interested in visiting Athens in October, I have created a guide on things to do in Athens during this month.

During the winter months, the opening hours of these sites are reduced, with many closing as early as 3 in the afternoon.

The Prime Time to Visit Greece for Swimming

Some individuals may claim that you can swim in Greece year-round. However, personally, I find winter swimming a bit too chilly. The latest I have ever dared to take a dip was in November, and I didn't venture back into the water until late March.

Swimming in Greece in September

For the rest of the year, the sea temperatures are delightful for swimming. The absolute best time for swimming in Greece is from mid-June until late September.

The Most Budget-Friendly Time to Visit Greece

Greece is a cost-effective country to visit at any time of the year, but the most affordable period is during the off-season.

The best time of year to visit Greece on a budget is between October and April. Accommodation is readily available during this period, often at discounted rates.

It's important to note that some tourist facilities may be closed during these months. However, I personally enjoyed visiting Santorini in November when there were very few tourists, despite a reduced selection of dining and nightlife options. It was the perfect time to hike from Fira to Oia.

The Optimal Time to Experience Traditional Festivals in Greece

If you're eager to immerse yourself in Greek culture, I highly recommend visiting Greece during Easter week. This is the most significant religious event in the Greek calendar and is celebrated throughout the country.

As Easter week is a public holiday, securing a hotel room in a popular destination during Good Friday and the Easter weekend can be challenging. I suggest booking in advance if possible.

The Best Months to Visit the Greek Islands

Some Greek islands completely shut down during the winter season and are only open for the summer months. Others experience a surge in visitors during specific times of the year, particularly in August.

Here are the best months to visit some popular Greek islands:

  • Best time to visit Santorini: April, May, June, September, October, November
  • Best time to visit Milos: June to September
  • Best time to visit Mykonos: June, July, September
  • Best time to visit Crete: June to September
  • Best time to visit Zakynthos: June, July, September

In conclusion, the best time to visit Greece depends on your specific preferences and interests. If you want to see the ancient sites and popular islands without the crowds, consider visiting before the peak summer season. If you're seeking a beach holiday, July and August offer the warmest temperatures. However, June and mid to late September are still ideal for swimming and exploring the islands. Keep in mind any personal constraints you may have, such as work or family obligations. Hopefully, this guide has provided you with valuable insights into determining the best time to travel to Greece for you.
