The Ngorongoro Crater, located in Tanzania, stands as the world’s largest unbroken and unflooded volcanic caldera. Formed millions of years ago by a volcanic explosion, this colossal crater is considered a natural haven for a variety of wildlife species, all of which can be found on the crater floor.

Virunga National Park - Rwanda and Uganda

The Virunga Mountains, stretching across the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, are a chain of captivating volcanic peaks. These mountains owe their breathtaking beauty to their lush and fertile slopes. Notably, the Virunga Mountains serve as the last remaining habitat for the critically endangered mountain gorillas. We had the privilege of meeting Ian Redmond, one of the world's foremost gorilla experts, during our travels in India. Since then, we have been captivated by the idea of encountering these magnificent creatures firsthand. Although we have yet to visit the gorillas, our conversations with both Ian Redmond and officials from Rwanda Tourism have provided us with extensive knowledge about these incredible beings. Furthermore, Virunga National Park and the Virunga Mountains are home to other fascinating animals, including chimpanzees, forest elephants, and okapis, which are similar to giraffes but possess shorter legs and necks, as well as striped legs.

Table Mountain - South Africa

Upon our arrival in Cape Town, the city was initially veiled in a thick layer of clouds. Although we had heard rumors of its stunning beauty, it took four days for the true splendor of the city to reveal itself. Once the rain lifted, a truly awe-inspiring sight unfolded before us: the majestic Table Mountain towering above us. Nestled within the Namib Naukluft Park of Namibia lies the expansive clay pan known as Sossusvlei. This region boasts magnificent sand dunes, with some towering an incredible 300 meters in height, often referred to as the tallest in the world. Amidst the rare occurrence of rainfall, Sossusvlei transforms into a breathtaking landscape, as the pan fills with water, resulting in a striking turquoise lake that remains for an extended period due to the slow water filtration caused by the clay layers. Often mistakenly referred to as the Okavanga Swamp, the Okavango Delta is, in fact, the world's largest inland delta, covering a sprawling area of 17,000 square kilometers. This breathtaking water feature was formed thousands of years ago when Lake Makgadikgadi dried up, leaving behind an intricate labyrinth of inland lagoons, lakes, and islands that weave through the Kalahari Desert plains in Botswana. The Okavango Delta stands as a testament to the captivating wonders of nature and has been attracting explorers and tourists alike for centuries.

Following the Grand Canyon in America, Namibia's Fish River Canyon stands as one of the most spectacular canyon formations in the world. We have cherished memories of cycling along the famous Elephant Highway through Chobe National Park. As we pedaled along the smooth road, covering a distance of 800 kilometers in just five days, we often wondered what magnificent wildlife dwelled in the tall grass. Renowned for harboring Africa's largest concentration of elephants, Chobe National Park offered us unique camping opportunities amidst elephant dung. We were constantly amazed, anticipating the arrival of the next herd passing through our camp. One of our most extraordinary African safari experiences involved embarking on a riverboat in Chobe, leisurely drifting along its waters while observing the captivating wildlife congregating along the shores. The hospitality displayed by the people of Malawi left an indelible impression on us. Moreover, Malawi offers an array of activities to engage in, including safaris, cruising along the Lilongwe River, and exploring Lake Malawi itself, which ranks as the fourth largest lake on Earth.

Kruger National Park - South Africa

During our journey from Zambia to South Africa by bicycle, we had the pleasure of visiting various national parks, including the renowned Kruger National Park. As the premier wildlife viewing game reserve in South Africa, Kruger National Park offers an unparalleled safari experience. Serving as the country's primary safari destination, Kruger National Park is renowned for its diverse range of wildlife, including Africa's iconic Big 5. It is astounding how few individuals are aware of the captivating White Desert of Egypt. Ranking high on our list of must-visit Egyptian destinations, second only to the Great Pyramids, the White Desert proved to be an incomparable experience. Situated near the town of Farafra in Central Egypt, this remarkable region boasts white chalky formations sculpted by sandstorms that are commonplace. To truly immerse ourselves in the life and culture of the Bedouins residing in the area, we embarked on a thrilling safari that guided us through the White Desert. The experience of camping under the vast expanse of stars in the middle of the Western Sahara Desert remains etched in our memories.

Situated near the city of Luxor, Karnak Temple Complex represents just one among the many breathtaking sites that await visitors to this captivating region. Abu Simbel - Egypt

The two temples at Abu Simbel, which were historically moved from their original location, are a breathtaking sight to behold. We had the opportunity to visit Abu Simbel while traveling by ferry from Egypt to Sudan, and it was truly an extraordinary experience.

These temples were carved out of the sandstone cliff near the River Nile over three millennia ago, during the reign of the great Pharaoh, Ramesses II. Built to honor the Pharaoh and the Egyptian Gods, they stand as a testament to the remarkable craftsmanship and architectural prowess of the ancient Egyptians.

Mana Pools National Park (Zimbabwe)

One of the most incredible destinations for adventure travel in Africa is Mana Pools in Zimbabwe. It offers a unique safari experience where both unguided and guided walking are allowed, making it perfect for those seeking a close connection with nature. Additionally, Mana Pools provides the opportunity to canoe through the pristine wilderness of the forest-fringed Zambezi River and its associated pools. Expect to encounter a diverse range of wildlife, including elephants, hippos, buffalos, crocodiles, water-associated birds, lions, and leopards.

Many lodges in the park offer expertly guided game walks, but the true adventure lies in embarking on a multi-day trek between semi-permanent fly camps, immersing yourself in the sights and scents of the bush without the distraction of a running engine. While rhinos are absent, the park boasts an abundance of wildlife, including the Big Five, with a particularly high chance of intimate leopard sightings.

• The best time to visit South Luangwa is during the dry season, which is also the peak game-viewing period from July to September.
• There are several midrange and exclusive lodges and camps bordering the national park, some of which also operate fly camps within the park.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (Uganda)

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda is a haven for mountain gorillas. It offers a unique opportunity to witness these gentle giants, the world's largest primates, in their misty mountain habitat. Apart from gorillas, the park is home to other fascinating forest dwellers such as yellow-backed duikers, L'Hoest's monkeys, and 23 bird species endemic to the Albertine Rift, including the beautiful African green broadbill.

Egypt, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Africa, boasts a rich history that is unparalleled.

Spanning a large geographic area and filled with numerous historical sites, exploring Egypt could easily take several months. During my two-week trip, I had the pleasure of visiting Cairo/Giza, Luxor, and Aswan. Here are some of the incredible activities and tourist attractions I experienced:

Giza: the "must-do" of any trip to Egypt

When one thinks of Egypt, the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx automatically come to mind. These iconic structures are a sight to behold and offer a range of activities. Visitors can take pictures, explore the interiors of certain pyramids, or even ride camels or horses in the vicinity.

Explore Cairo's Egyptian Museum

A visit to Cairo is incomplete without exploring the Egyptian Museum, located in downtown Cairo. Luxor is also an ideal location for sailing along the Nile River, with its clear blue waters and beautiful weather. Be sure to indulge in some traditional Egyptian cuisine by the river and visit the two temples in Luxor.

Visit Hurghada, the laid-back beach town

Hurghada, known as the laid-back beach town, offers beautiful waters along the Red Sea coast. Tourists flock here for snorkeling, beach relaxation, and deep-sea scuba diving. If you prefer a leisurely stay by the water, Hurghada is the perfect destination.

Explore a Nubian village in Aswan

With abundant sunshine and minimal rainfall, Aswan is a border city near Sudan. It is known for its Nubian village and the presence of one of the oldest Egyptian communities. While in Aswan, I highly recommend taking a tour of a Nubian village and visiting the infamous Ras Simbel. This site, located a few hours away, offers a unique experience. Additionally, you can sail along the Nile River in Aswan, known for its crystal-clear waters. Don't forget to stock up on beautiful Nubian spices and souvenirs before heading back home.
