Some must-see museums include the Natural History Museum, the Air and Space Museum, the Postal Museum, and the Spy Museum (which, despite not being a Smithsonian institution, is one of the best museums I've ever visited!).
In addition to the museums, visitors can also explore important government buildings such as the White House, Capitol, and Supreme Court. While White House tours are notoriously difficult to obtain, tours of the Capitol are relatively easy to arrange and offer a fascinating glimpse into the workings of the US government. To secure a tour, reach out to your congressional representative.
The monuments in DC are awe-inspiring as well. The towering Washington Monument looms over the cityscape, offering visitors the opportunity to ride an elevator to the top for stunning views. But the World War II Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Jefferson Memorial are also unforgettable landmarks that should not be missed.
Of course, there are plenty of memorable experiences to be had beyond the National Mall. A visit to Arlington National Cemetery, just across the Potomac River, is a sobering reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have served in the US military.
