Great news for travelers seeking the perfect time to visit Spain: Any time is a great time!

Spain is an enchanting country, brimming with captivating history, an extraordinary culinary scene, and diverse landscapes perfect for a city getaway, mountain retreat, or a beach excursion like no other. Ready for your dream vacation? Here's everything you need to find the ideal time to visit Spain, based on weather conditions, other tourists, and more.

Spain is a relatively large country with a varied ecosystem. However, the official tourism website states that no matter when you visit, you're likely to experience at least some sunshine. Spain is a sunny country, with around 3,000 hours of sunshine every year, as per the tourism group, "although the temperatures are mild, there are still differences depending on the seasons and areas of the country."

As per the tourism organization, the spring months, typically from March through June, present the most moderate climate. Using the nation's capital of Madrid as an example, the average temperature rises from 50 degrees Fahrenheit in March to 72 in June, with April and May marking the rainiest months.

July through September are amongst the hottest months, with temperatures reaching their peak average of 78 degrees Fahrenheit in July. It's also the month that experiences the least amount of rain. This makes summer a prime time to escape the city and head to Spain's coast or even to the Canary Islands to soak up the sun and dip in the ocean.

From September to December, temperatures gradually drop to around 42 degrees Fahrenheit, getting cooler and cooler. From January through March, things remain rather chilly, with January clocking in with the coolest average temperature of 41 degrees.

Spain has no shortage of stunning cities to visit, and Barcelona is undoubtedly one of the best. From the dazzling Gothic architecture to the city’s electrifying events, Barcelona is a top destination in Spain's Catalonia region. Visit Barcelona in early summer to enjoy the beaches before it gets too humid, or in the fall for sightseeing and a few festivals. June sees good weather and celebrations like Nit de Sant Joan and Pride Barcelona, as well as festivals like Primavera Sound, Sónar, and El Grec Barcelona.

If you're planning a trip to Spain, consider visiting its capital city during the spring or fall seasons for optimal weather and fewer crowds. Madrid hosts various festivities during springtime, such as Semana Santa in April, Dos de Mayo and Fiesta de San Isidro in May. However, the Autumn Festival, also known as Feria del Otoño, is the most significant event held during the fall season, featuring renowned artists from across the world and a lineup of operatic, ballet, dance, music, and theatrical performances.

According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the top inbound tourism markets for Spain are the United Kingdom, Germany, and France, with the United States experiencing a significant upsurge in visitors. Spain has seen an increase in its popularity over the last decade, with a staggering 125 million visitors arriving in 2019. The peak season for tourism in Spain is in summer and early fall, but this period can result in higher prices and limited availability for flights, accommodations, activities, and restaurants. Therefore, we recommend making reservations as early as possible if you intend to visit during this period.

Those seeking less crowded destinations should plan their visits between November to February, Spain's coldest months, where they can still enjoy the cities and the country's under-the-radar ski resorts. This time is also the cheapest to visit Spain, according to Hotels.com, coinciding with its thin tourism season and famous Christmas markets.

Lastly, Spain's many festivals are not to be missed, with options available for every month of the year. While some of the most famous festivals to attend are Semana Santa during mid-April, San Fermin or Pamplona Bull Run in July, and the Tomatina Tomato Fight in August, we recommend checking the yearly festival calendar to choose the best one to fit your trip.
