For a trip costing $1,000, the average cost of travel insurance is , but for a trip costing $20,000, the average cost of insurance is just over $1,200. The cost of travel insurance is roughly 6% of the total price of either vacation. The Typical Cost of Travel Insurance Based on the Price of Your Trip

An important factor that travel insurance companies use to determine your premium is the total price of your trip. The higher the total cost of your trip (and the amount you choose to insure it for), the more the insurance provider stands to gain from any claims you might file.
Forbes Advisor compared different levels of coverage for a female, age 30, taking a 14-day trip from California to Mexico.

We found that, on average, travel insurance costs between 5% and 6% of the total cost of a trip, with an average of 6% for trips that cost between $1,000 and $50,000.

There is a wide variation in insurance premiums based on the scope of coverage. For a $2,500 trip, for instance, we found that the average cost of travel insurance plans was $120, with prices ranging from for a very basic policy to $240 for one that included more benefits and protections.

Premiums for Different Age Groups

To a greater extent than younger travelers, those aged 60 and up may see increases in their premiums when purchasing a policy to cover a trip abroad. The average cost of travel insurance for someone aged 80 is 3 more than for someone aged 20 according to our research.

Senior travelers should add an extra eight percent to eighteen percent to their travel budgets to cover the cost of a senior travel insurance policy.

Average premiums for a traveler aged 60 years old range from $270 for a bare-bones policy to 4 for a more comprehensive one.

Rates for Travel Insurance, on Average, Per Passenger

Your travel insurance premium may increase or decrease depending on the number of people covered by the policy. While we expected to see a proportionately larger increase in premiums as the number of policyholders increased, we found instead that this was not the case.

The average cost of a 14-day trip from California to Mexico was $5,000, so we looked at prices for solo travelers, couples, and a family of four. While the number of vacationers increased, the cost of travel insurance did not rise significantly. As a family of four, you'll pay about $30 more than a solo traveler, but that's still considerably cheaper than most hotels.

According to our analysis of average costs, travel insurance for a single woman in her forties costs the least, while a couple, one man and one woman in their forties, pays only about $20 more for the same coverage. Including two children, ages 8 and 10, the family of four only pays $12 more than the couple of the same age.

Fees Usually Paid by Travelers Who Purchase "Cancel for Any Reason" Insurance

All-inclusive travel insurance policies feature trip cancellation coverage. If you have to cancel your trip for one of the covered reasons, the policy will pay for all of your expenses.

Adding "cancel for any reason" (CFAR) coverage can be helpful if you're concerned about the possibility of needing to cancel your trip for a cause not specifically covered.

Upgraded plans may include "cancel for any reason" protection, which guarantees at least some of your prepaid trip costs back if you have to cut your trip short for any reason.

Based on our study of 16 policies, we can say that the average cost of a policy without CFAR is $225, while the average cost of a travel plan with CFAR is $337.

CFAR typically adds 50% to the price of a comprehensive travel insurance policy.

Based on your specific requirements and comfort level with risk, you should determine whether or not purchasing "cancel for any reason" insurance is worthwhile. Consider including CFAR in your plan if you'd like the option to cancel your trip if you change your mind about going, but would like to be reimbursed in some way.

What Factors Affect Travel Insurance Rates

The price of travel insurance depends on a number of variables. The travel insurance policy provides benefits at a level one Medical coverage for international travel can range from $25,000 under some policies to $500,000 under others. Also:

  • The sum total of your travel expenses is a major factor in determining your travel insurance premium. Covered expenses include airfare, lodging, and any additional tours, activities, or meals that are prearranged and not refundable. Avoid purchasing insurance for things like a pre-paid hotel room that you won't need. Insurance claims cannot be submitted for money already owed to you.
  • Cost of travel insurance typically rises with the policyholder's age. One reason for this is the increased likelihood of illness or injury among those of advanced age who travel.
  • Increased travel insurance premiums are directly proportional to the number of people in your party.
  • Insurance premiums are proportional to the risk of a claim, so covering a longer trip will cost more.

Methodology

The average costs across all trip costs, age ranges, and numbers of travelers were calculated by analyzing rates for 23 different travel insurance plans. Our primary traveler was a woman in her thirties who was going to spend $5,000 on a 14-day trip from California to Mexico. We manipulated trip costs to determine typical rates.
