Thailand
Thailand is the place where my journey began, so it holds a special significance for me. It is where I made the decision to leave my job and travel the world. I lived there and fell in love with its beauty and charm. Thailand is truly incredible.
Not only is it breathtaking, but it is also very affordable.
Thailand has been a popular destination for backpackers in Southeast Asia for many years, and you can easily get by on a budget of $25-35 USD per day. This is thanks to inexpensive guesthouses, cheap street food that can cost as little as $1 USD, local buses, and a wide range of cheap or even free attractions. If you choose to stay on the islands or in more expensive accommodations, you can expect to spend around USD per day. However, even at this price point, Thailand is still one of the most budget-friendly destinations in the world and should not be missed!

During my budget backpacking days in Southeast Asia, Laos was one of the two destinations where I was able to keep my daily expenses at $30. Although the accommodation was slightly more expensive compared to other places in Southeast Asia at the time, many of the incredible activities in Laos were inexpensive. I paid $2.50 to visit one of the most stunning waterfalls in the world, for a full-day tubing experience along the Vang Vieng river, and for a fantastic tiger balm massage. Renting a motorbike was also cheap, and I had the opportunity to explore smaller towns where everything was even more affordable. With the increasing number of hostels catering to backpackers, it's possible to extend your stay in Laos with a lower budget. However, if you have a bit more to spend, you can find beautiful rooms for around $35, which would cost much more in the US.
- Meals: $3 – per day. Some hostels provide a basic breakfast
- Accommodation: $5-$10 per night in a hostel
- Transportation: – $15 for a motorbike for the day (prices may vary depending on the bike condition and your haggling skills), or up to $25 for an intercity bus ticket
- SIM card with data: for 1.5GB with 30-day validity
Vietnam
Vietnam is one of the most affordable countries in Asia, and it offers a wealth of exciting experiences!
There is much more to Vietnam than just the popular tourist spots. For example, the northern province of Ha Giang is known for its authenticity and natural beauty. The limestone landscapes of Tam Coc are also worth exploring. Additionally, the town of Phong Nha is a hub for adventure tourism and cave exploration. One of the most memorable experiences I had in Vietnam was camping inside the world's third-largest cave in Phong Nha.
In terms of costs, Vietnam is quite affordable. If you stick to local cuisine, you will find it challenging to spend more than a few dollars per meal. Even locally brewed beers cost as little as $0.20 per glass. Accommodation options are also reasonably priced, with clean and comfortable rooms available for as little as $10 per night. Whether you are a backpacker or simply looking for a budget-friendly holiday, Vietnam has plenty to offer.

Mid-range Budget: $45 a day
Highlights: Ha Long Bay, charming Hoi An, the bustling city of Hanoi
When to go: peak season from November to March, shoulder season from April to June and September to October
Laos
Think of Laos as a less touristy version of Thailand. It is a sparsely populated country with mountains and lush forests, making it a paradise for outdoor activities such as trekking, climbing, kayaking, zip-lining, and hot air ballooning. The best part is that you can enjoy all these activities without breaking the bank.
In recent years, Laos has become more accessible due to improved infrastructure while still maintaining its rural charm. This makes it the perfect time to visit if you are looking to escape the crowds and experience authenticity. Don't miss the opportunity to sleep in tree huts and go zip-lining through the jungle canopy with the famous Gibbon Experience. You should also visit the breathtaking waterfalls of the Bolaven Plateau.

Mid-range Budget: $45 a day
Highlights: Luang Prabang, Mekong river journeys, the Gibbon Experience
When to go: peak season from November to February, shoulder season in October and March-April
Cambodia, $30/day
I can personally attest that it is possible to spend a month in Cambodia with just $1000 if you choose to live frugally. Dormitory-style accommodations are very basic but incredibly cheap, as are food and drinks. I also found that haggling with Tuk Tuk drivers helped me avoid unfair charges. While there are some additional expenses, such as the 3-day pass to Angkor Wat for and diving trips that can add up, there are also opportunities to enjoy inexpensive activities like biking in a small village or indulging in cheap and delicious meat skewers that stretch your dollar.
Additionally, there are some gorgeous boutique hotels available on booking.com that, although not as cheap as hostels, provide excellent value for the price. I would highly recommend treating yourself to a couple of nights in one of these hotels and enjoying some relaxation time by the pool.
- Meals: $5 – $10 per day. Some hostels provide breakfast.
- Accommodation: $5-$15 per night in a hostel (here’s a guide to the best hostels in Cambodia)
- Transportation: -$15 for a motorbike for the day (prices may vary depending on the bike condition and your haggling skills) or an intercity bus ticket
- SIM card with data: $2 for 1.5GB with 30-day validity
Northern Thailand, $32/day
Northern Thailand is a great option for those on a tight budget. As you move southward, the cost of accommodation starts to increase significantly. If you're short on time and money for your trip to Thailand, it's best to stay in the northern region. Even in popular places like Chiang Mai and Pai, you can find affordable basic dorms for less than . By sticking to street food and embracing the local cuisine, not only will you save money, but you'll also have a more authentic and flavorful experience. Activities in northern Thailand are also budget-friendly, such as visiting the White Temple, hiking, or organizing day trips with fellow travelers.
Meals: $5 – $15 per day. Some hostels provide breakfast
Accommodation: $5-$10 per night in a hostel
Transportation: -$10 for a motorbike for the day (prices may vary depending on the bike condition and your haggling skills) or a rental car split between 4 people

China
China has been a fascinating destination for travelers since Marco Polo's time. While the days of it being an incredibly cheap destination are over, it remains a budget-friendly option in Asia, particularly if you venture away from the big cities. Although cities in China still offer affordable options, such as hostels for less than $20 USD per night, street food for $2-5 USD per meal, and local transportation for less than a dollar, you'll find even better deals when you explore the lesser-known regions and the country's interior. With its vast size, China offers endless opportunities for exploration.

South Korea

While many travelers flock to popular tourist destinations like Seoul, Busan, and Jeju Island, we have our sights set on a different city in South Korea: Mokpo, located in the Jeolla region at the southern tip of the peninsula. This port city offers unique dining experiences and specialty dishes like hongeo (a naturally fermented, extremely pungent skate-fish dish) that attract food lovers from around the world.
Taiwan, $45/day
Taiwan is known for its incredible street food. With just under $2, you can enjoy a plate of fragrant rice with pork or chicken, a large deep-fried chicken chop, or a bowl of delicious vermicelli with oysters. The best part is that the food is not only delicious but also incredibly cheap. If you're a foodie on a budget, Taiwan is the place to be. In cities like Taipei and Tainan, you can even rent city bikes for less than $0.50 per hour, and the first 30 minutes are free, so you can explore the city without spending any money on transportation.
However, it's worth noting that high-end food and clothing prices in Taiwan can be quite expensive, similar to the prices in the US. Intercity traveling can also be costly with the High-Speed Rail (HSR), or time-consuming with slightly cheaper options. Moreover, internet prices in Taiwan are not as cheap as in other countries.
- Meals: $5 - $10 per day. Some hostels provide breakfast.
- Accommodation: $10 - $35 per night in a hostel (I highly recommend this one in Taipei!). Keep in mind that Taiwan’s current COVID restrictions don’t allow travelers to stay in shared accommodations (ie hostel dorms) for the first 7 nights of their stay.
- Transportation: $0 - $3 for a full day of bike, bus, and train rides, or $20 - $40 for an HSR ride between cities.
- SIM card with data: $33 for unlimited data with 28-day validity.
Malaysia
1 USD = 4.39 MYR
Malaysia is a country where your money can go a long way. If you enjoy street food and exploring cities like Kuala Lumpur on foot, you'll find that Malaysia is incredibly affordable. In addition, visiting the country's pristine beaches, limestone caves, and tea plantations is often inexpensive or even free. If you're willing to spend a bit more, I highly recommend staying at The Datai Langkawi, despite its higher cost, as it offers a truly worthwhile experience.
Philippines
1 USD = 55.60 PHP
The Philippines is a dream destination for island hopping. Places like Palawan and Siargao are not only economically accessible but also incredibly beautiful. Even luxury resorts like Shangri-La Boracay can be reserved for under $350 per night, making it an enticing option for travelers.

Indonesia
Indonesia is famous for Bali, but there is much more to explore in this vast archipelago. From the neighboring islands of Lombok and Java to the spectacular Komodo islands and rural Flores, there are countless destinations to discover. The best part is that Indonesia offers budget travelers the opportunity to experience white sand beaches, jungles, volcanoes, and encounters with wild orangutans.
Backpacker Budget: $30 a day Mid-range Budget: $50 a day Highlights: Bromo volcano, Borobodur temples, Bali, islands beyond Bali When to go: peak season Jun-Sep, shoulder season Mar-May & Oct-Nov
India, $25/day
India is known for being one of the cheapest countries to travel to, as long as you're willing to haggle and search for deals. Keep in mind that budget accommodations, which cost around $3 per night, may be simple and require showering with buckets of heated water. While the north may not offer as many cheap options, the south, with its beautiful beaches, is a great choice for budget accommodation.
The best way to travel through India on a budget is to book things yourself, avoiding agents and online booking sites, except for intercity travel. By directly visiting local guesthouses, restaurants, and tour companies, you can easily get better prices compared to online quotes.
- Meals: $3 - per day
- Accommodation: $5 - $10 per night in a local guesthouse
- Transportation: $1 - $3 for a full day of bus and train rides, or - $30 for an intercity train ride (domestic flights can be as low as $30)
- SIM card with data: $3 for 1.5GB with 30-day validity
Nepal
Nepal is a captivating destination with its warm and welcoming people and the vibrant city of Kathmandu. It's also one of the cheapest places for mountain trekking, whether you choose to go with a guide or trek independently.
There are well-supported trekking routes throughout the Himalayas with many tea houses where you can eat and sleep. During my 7-day trek to Annapurna Base Camp, I spent less than $20 per day.
Backpacker Budget: $20 a day Mid-range Budget: $40 a day Highlights: chaotic Kathmandu, trekking in the Himalayas When to go: peak season Oct-Nov — shoulder season Sep, Dec, Mar-Apr
Kyrgyzstan, $25/day
Kyrgyzstan is a popular choice for travelers interested in exploring Central Asia, offering options for all budgets. The food in Kyrgyzstan is both cheap and interesting, and getting around using minibusses is also affordable. The prices for public transportation are fixed and considered one of the cheapest aspects of traveling in Kyrgyzstan. Accommodation options include hostels in major destinations and local homestays in rural areas, both costing less than $10 per night. If you plan to do a multi-day hike like the Tian Shan Mountains, most tour prices will include most necessary expenses.
- Meals: $4 - per day
- Accommodation: - $12 per night in a hostel or a local guesthouse
- Transportation: $0.20 for a local minibus ride, or $4 for an intercity bus ride
- SIM card with data: $3 for 3GB with 30-day validity (may not work in the mountains)

Armenia
In 2018, something incredible happened in Armenia. The people peacefully protested against their dictator, leading to positive changes and increased interest in tourism. While still a poor country with remnants of its Soviet past, Armenia offers a unique and off-the-usual-trail experience.
Armenia is perfect for adventurous travelers seeking places that are less crowded. There are cute medieval towns, ancient fortified churches, and the mighty Carpathian mountain range to explore. If you're lucky, you might even witness the annual Vardavar event in Yerevan, where the entire city engages in a playful water fight.

The Balkans
The Balkans, located in southeastern Europe, offers the cheapest travel experience in the entire continent. This off-the-radar region is composed of several countries that receive relatively fewer tourists, providing both affordability and incredible value. From cheap wine to amazing hiking and nature, stunning coastlines, hearty food, and vibrant nightlife, the Balkans have it all.
You can easily get by with a budget of $30 USD per day, which is a fraction of what you would spend in Western Europe. Groceries for a week cost as little as $25 USD, and a beer can be enjoyed for around $2 USD.

Romania
Don't underestimate Romania! This Eastern European country offers incredible experiences that will leave you amazed. Transylvania, the region that inspired the tales of Dracula, is packed with medieval towns, ancient fortified churches, and the mighty Carpathian mountain range. Whether you visit in spring, summer, or winter, Romania has something to offer. You can enjoy affordable ski resorts and snow-covered castles during the winter or explore its charming towns and mountains during other seasons.
With a budget of about $30-40 per day, you can comfortably explore Romania. If you prefer a more lavish holiday, you can find cute bed and breakfast options starting at $30 per night. Don't miss out on this European travel secret!

Croatia: Affordable and Beautiful
If you're looking for turquoise waters, sunshine, and lively parties, Croatia should be at the top of your budget travel list. With thousands of islands surrounding the mainland, incredible weather from May to October, and beach and yacht parties year-round, it's a dream destination. The cost of essential expenses like accommodation, transportation, and food is reasonable. Plus, there are stunning architectural wonders to admire, interesting sights such as the Museum of Broken Relationships to explore, and charming small towns to visit. To experience Croatia on a budget, follow a similar approach to Greece and travel in the shoulder season. Avoid the busy months of July and August if possible, and minimize transfers by focusing on a specific group of islands. Keep in mind that Croatia's popularity is increasing each year, so visiting sooner rather than later is recommended to take advantage of great deals.
Serbia: Cultural Delights for Less
1 USD = 110.46 RSD
Belgrade is emerging as one of Europe's most exciting cultural hubs, and the best part is that it's significantly cheaper than cities like Paris or Berlin (for now). You can find hotels for under $100, although accommodations may not be your priority when the city's vibrant club scene keeps you dancing all night. Take some time to explore Belgrade's wealth of museums and contemporary art installations, many of which have opened in the past few years.
Greece: Budget Travel with Stunning Views
To travel on a budget in Greece, timing is key. While prices for flights, accommodation, and tours have decreased since the country's debt crisis in 2010, summer months are still more expensive. Avoid July and August, the hottest and busiest months, and opt for a few weeks before or after summer for a more affordable and crowd-free experience. You can save on food costs by buying fresh produce from local markets and preparing your own meals, as dining out in certain parts of Greece can be pricey. Enjoying a picnic on the beautiful beach can be just as satisfying as a lavish seafood restaurant meal. Take advantage of free walking tours and plan your island hopping wisely to minimize transfers. Sometimes a domestic flight can be cheaper than a long bus ride.
Hungary: Indulgence without Breaking the Bank
1 USD = 379.64 HUF
Hungary's favorable economy makes it an ideal destination for those planning a trip to Budapest. The city is home to a growing scene of Michelin-starred restaurants and high-tech spas, all at prices that won't put a dent in your wallet. There are plenty of five-star hotels with affordable rates, but consider splurging on a room at the Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace Budapest, a stunning property filled with chandeliers, stained glass, and white stucco. Budapest is known as Europe's capital of hedonism, so embrace the indulgence.

Poland: Rich in History and Affordable
If you're a fan of heritage sites, Poland has an impressive selection of 14 to offer. This culturally rich country often gets overlooked by tourists, but it shouldn't be underestimated. The cost of entering museums and historical sites is affordable, averaging around $5, especially when compared to other European countries. Polish cuisine offers more variety than its neighboring countries, and while it can be heavy on the calories, it's delicious. Transportation by train may be a bit dated, but it's also affordable. You can easily spend a day wandering and people-watching, with occasions where you spend money only on essentials. Don't miss out on small towns like Gdansk, Wroclaw, and Zakopane, which are not only stunning but potentially even cheaper to travel in.
- Meals: $10 – $15 per day
- Accommodation: – $20 per night in a hostel
- Transportation: $1 – $3 for a full day of train rides, $10-$15 for an intercity train ride

As tourism in the Czech Republic, particularly in Prague, continues to increase, prices have also gone up in recent years. However, it still remains one of the most affordable countries to travel in Central Europe, especially if you venture beyond Prague to places like Cesky Krumlov and Telc. Local transportation is reliable and affordable, and getting a 3-day pass can save you money if you plan on doing a lot of traveling. Czech cuisine is hearty and satisfying, although not the healthiest. Save money by eating out at local restaurants for lunch and opting for a light snack for dinner. While entrance fees to historical sites and museums can be expensive, hiking up to admire the architecture from the outside can be just as rewarding.

Morocco: Exotic Adventures on a Budget
Morocco, with its close proximity to Europe, offers affordable travel options. However, be prepared to navigate past persistent salesmen trying to sell overpriced souvenirs. Organized tours can be more expensive, so consider traveling independently to save money. Riads, traditional hotels with garden courtyards, provide great value accommodations with a touch of luxury. Venture into the Sahara Desert for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, camping under the clear night sky.

However, the Egyptian pound has significantly increased in value this year, making it more affordable than ever to visit iconic sites such as the Pyramids, cruise the Nile, and discover the wonders of Cairo. We are particularly excited about new establishments like the St. Regis Cairo and the beach villas at Four Seasons Hotel Alexandria. Although Indonesia has experienced a surge in tourism after the popularity of "Eat, Pray, Love," it remains an affordable vacation destination. While many travelers flock to Bali, where resort prices can be steep, you can have a cheaper and more tranquil trip to the islands of Sumba and Lombok. Don't forget to explore Jakarta, where you can indulge in delicious greasy noodles and nasi goreng gila from street stalls for just a few dollars.

Laos
4000 Islands, Mekong River
Think of Laos as Thailand but without the overwhelming crowds. It is a sparsely populated country with mountainous landscapes and around 70% forest coverage, making it a paradise for outdoor activities such as trekking, climbing, kayaking, zip-lining, and hot air ballooning, all at affordable prices.
Laos has become more accessible in recent years due to improved infrastructure while maintaining its rural charm. Now is the perfect time to visit if you want to escape the crowds and experience authenticity. Vietnam
1 USD = 23,545.00 VND
Vietnam is a must-visit country in Southeast Asia. Not only is the exchange rate favorable, but the country itself is incredibly beautiful. While Hanoi offers a romantic city experience, don't hesitate to venture off the beaten track to places like Ninh Van Bay and Phú Quốc island, where you can find pristine beaches and intimate resorts away from the tourist crowds.
Thailand
Thailand has a special place in many travelers' hearts. It's where the adventure begins. This incredibly diverse country offers a range of experiences, all at an affordable price.
With a well-established tourist trail, Thailand is the hub of backpacking in Southeast Asia. You can easily get by with $25-35 USD per day thanks to cheap guesthouses, budget street food (some as low as $1 USD), local buses, and numerous cheap or free attractions. While staying on the islands or in more expensive accommodations may raise the daily cost to around USD, Thailand remains one of the most budget-friendly destinations worldwide and should not be missed!
China
China has fascinated travelers for centuries. While it may no longer be a dirt-cheap destination, it is still a budget-friendly country, particularly if you venture outside of the major cities. Urban areas offer affordable hostels, inexpensive street food (around $2-5 USD per meal), and affordable local transportation. However, the best travel deals and bargains can be found when you explore the less-visited interior regions of this vast country. With its massive size and endless attractions, China remains one of the best value places to travel, offering a wealth of experiences at reasonable prices.
India, $25/day
India is known for being one of the cheapest countries to travel to, but this is only true if you are willing to haggle and search for deals. Keep in mind that budget accommodations in the north tend to be very basic and may require showering with heated water buckets. However, the south offers better options for budget accommodations and stunning beaches.
To truly travel India on a budget, it is best to book things directly rather than rely on agents or online booking sites (except for some intercity travel). By visiting local guesthouses, restaurants, and tour companies, you can often negotiate lower prices, sometimes half of what is quoted online.
- Meals: $3 - per day
- Accommodation: $5 - $10 per night in a local guesthouse
- Transportation: $1 - $3 for a full day of bus and train rides, or - $30 for an intercity train ride (sometimes a domestic flight can be as low as $30)
- SIM card with data: $3 for 1.5GB with 30-day validity.
Malaysia
1 USD = 4.39 MYR
Malaysia offers excellent value for your money, especially if you indulge in street food and explore cities like Kuala Lumpur on foot. Visiting pristine beaches, limestone caves, and breathtaking tea plantations can be inexpensive or even free. For a splurge, we highly recommend The Datai Langkawi, a luxurious but worthwhile accommodation option.
Nepal
Ah, Nepal... I was captivated from the moment I heard "namaste." The warmth and kindness of the Nepalese people, along with the bustling energy of Kathmandu, left a lasting impression on me when I visited a few years ago. What's even better is that Nepal is one of the most affordable destinations for mountain trekking in the world, whether you choose to go with a guide or explore independently.
There are well-established routes throughout the Himalayas with plenty of tea houses along the way where you can find food and lodging. During my incredible 7-day trek to Annapurna Base Camp, I spent less than $20 per day.

South Korea
1 USD = 1,295.74 KRW
While other travelers flock to popular tourist destinations like Seoul, Busan, and Jeju Island, we have our sights set on another gem in South Korea: Mokpo, located in the Jeolla region at the southern tip of the peninsula. This port city offers some of the most unique and delicious dining experiences in the country. Food lovers from around the world are drawn to specialties like hongeo, a pungent fermented skate-fish dish.
Taiwan, $45/day
Two words: street food. In Taiwan, you can enjoy a plate of fragrant rice topped with pork or chicken, a large deep-fried chicken chop, or a bowl of delicious vermicelli with oysters, all for less than $2. The food in Taiwan is not only mouth-watering but also incredibly affordable. For budget-conscious foodies, this is the place to be. In cities like Taipei and Tainan, you can also take advantage of the city bike program. For less than $0.50 per hour, or even free for the first 30 minutes, you can explore the city without spending a fortune on transportation.
However, it's worth noting that high-end dining and clothing in Taiwan can be quite expensive, comparable to prices in the United States. Intercity travel options include the convenient High-Speed Rail (HSR), but it can be pricey, or slightly cheaper but more time-consuming alternatives. Additionally, internet service in Taiwan is not as cheap as in the aforementioned countries.
- Meals: $5 – $10 per day. Some hostels provide breakfast
- Accommodation: $10 – $35 per night in a hostel (I highly recommend this one in Taipei!) Please note that due to Taiwan's current COVID restrictions, shared accommodations such as hostel dorms are not allowed for the first 7 nights of travelers' stay.
- Transportation: $0 – $3 for a full day of bike, bus, and train rides, or $20 – $40 for an HSR ride between cities

EUROPE
If you're looking for an affordable and off-the-beaten-path European adventure, Romania is the perfect destination. Georgia
Georgia has everything I look for in a destination: affordability, delectable food and wine, breathtaking hikes and mountain scenery, and fewer tourists. I instantly fell in love with Georgia and regret not visiting earlier (I even extended my stay because I enjoyed it so much!).
Nestled in the Caucasus region, Georgia has been a cultural crossroads for centuries, yet it remains lesser-known compared to other destinations. The bustling city of Tbilisi is full of vibrant activity, while the rest of the country offers off-the-beaten-path adventures in rugged landscapes.
You can easily get by on a budget of $25-30 USD per day in Georgia. A beer costs around $2, a week's worth of groceries is about $25-30, and most museums and historic sites charge just $2-3 for admission.
While it may seem remote, Georgia is poised to become a popular backpacking destination. I would return in a heartbeat!

Armenia
Something incredible happened in Armenia in 2018: peaceful protests led to the resignation of a dictator. Since then, there has been a sense of positivity in Armenia and growing interest in tourism.
While still a relatively poor country, Armenia's landscapes are dotted with remnants of its Soviet past, and the streets are filled with Ladas. neighboring Georgia may be more well-known for now, but Armenia offers a unique experience for those who veer off the usual path. I was fortunate to visit during Vardavar, an annual event where the entire city of Yerevan engages in a playful water fight, including the police and fire brigade!

Uzbekistan is a rising star in foreign travel and one of the most exciting and affordable destinations in Central Asia. Its major cities are filled with stunning mosques and unique brutalist monuments, all of which can be explored for free. Turkey
1 USD = 18.63 TRY
While visiting major landmarks and staying in luxury hotels in Istanbul can quickly deplete your Turkish lira, Turkey can still be a budget-friendly destination. (Plus, the exchange rate is currently very favorable!) By opting for non-touristy restaurants and street food vendors and exploring free attractions like the Grand Bazaar and Hagia Sophia, you can keep costs down without sacrificing the experience of this incredible country.
The Baltic states
Often overshadowed by their Nordic and Russian neighbors, the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania offer affordable and charming travel experiences.
Think of them as "Scandinavia on a budget."
With their abundant woodlands, peat bogs, lakes, and picturesque log cabins painted in vibrant red, these countries evoke a Scandinavian feel. The people share a love for cross-country skiing, saunas, and vodka. The best part? The costs are about a third of what you'd find in the Nordic countries.
I particularly enjoyed traveling in Estonia, a country with a rich history and charming appeal. While savoring local IPAs in Tallinn, friendly locals regaled me with tales of IPOs.
Although Tallinn's tourist center can be pricier, the overall cost of living in the country is quite affordable. You can find dinner for less than 7 Euros and hotels rooms for 30 to 40 Euros per night.

Many people have preconceived notions about this Eastern European country, but once they visit, they realize how incredible it truly is.

Whether you're visiting in spring or summer, or even in winter with its low-cost ski resorts and snow-covered castles, Romania offers a wealth of affordable adventures.

If you're seeking turquoise waters, sunshine, and a vibrant party scene, look no further than Croatia for your next budget-friendly trip. With thousands of islands surrounding the mainland, excellent weather from May to October, and beach and yacht parties all year round, Croatia has it all. Not to mention the beautiful architecture, intriguing sights like the Museum of Broken Relationships, and charming small towns waiting to be explored.
To stay within your budget while traveling in Croatia, consider visiting during the shoulder season to avoid the higher prices of July and August, the country's busiest months. Additionally, opt for non-touristy restaurants and street food vendors, and take advantage of free attractions like the Grand Bazaar and Hagia Sophia.
Greece, $45/day
When it comes to traveling in Greece on a budget, timing is key. While prices for flights, accommodation, and tours have significantly decreased since the country's debt crisis in 2010, the summer months still tend to be more expensive. To save money, avoid traveling in July and August, which are the hottest and busiest months. Instead, plan your trip a few weeks before or after summer to enjoy Greece with smaller crowds and a lower budget. Additionally, you can cut down on food costs by buying fresh produce from local markets and preparing your own meals, as dining out in certain parts of Greece can be expensive. A simple picnic by a stunning beach can be just as enjoyable as a lavish seafood dinner!
When it comes to activities, take advantage of the free walking tours and, if you plan on island hopping in Greece, carefully plan your itinerary to minimize transfers between islands. Sometimes, a domestic flight can be cheaper than a bus ride for long-distance travel.

If you have an interest in heritage sites, Poland has 14 to offer. This country is brimming with culture and history, yet it often gets overlooked by tourists. The cost of entering museums and historical sites averages around $5, which is quite affordable by European standards. Polish food is delicious and offers more variety than neighboring countries, though it can be heavy on the calories. Trains in Poland might be a bit outdated, but they are very affordable.
Poland is one of those countries where you can spend an entire day just wandering and observing people. There will be days when you spend solely on essentials. Make sure to dine at a "milk bar", which is a popular and affordable option among locals. Don't limit yourself to Krakow and Warsaw, explore smaller towns like Gdansk, Wroclaw, and Zakopane, which are all breathtaking and possibly even more cost-effective to travel to.

Czech Republic, $40/day
As more and more tourists flock to the Czech Republic, particularly Prague, for its rich history and affordable beer, prices have increased in recent years. However, it still remains one of the cheapest central European countries to travel to, especially if you venture beyond Prague to places like Cesky Krumlov and Telc, where you can experience authentic Czech culture at a lower cost. Local transportation in the Czech Republic is reliable and affordable, and if you plan on traveling extensively, consider purchasing a 3-day pass for $16.
Czech cuisine is hearty and portions are generous. While it may not be the healthiest option (most meals consist of potatoes and meat), it will definitely satisfy your hunger. To stretch your budget, have lunch at a local restaurant and opt for a light snack for dinner. Entrance fees for historical sites and museums can be quite pricey ($18 to enter the Prague Castle), but remember that you don't always have to go inside. The hikes up to these sites offer stunning views, and you can always admire the architecture from the outside and selectively choose which ones to explore.

If you enjoy nightlife, Vilnius has a vibrant and fun scene, with fairly affordable alcohol. For a quieter experience, explore the Old Town in Kaunas, Klaipeda, and Curonian Spit. Bolivia
If you're seeking 5-star luxury, Bolivia may not be the ideal destination. Life in this country is simple, and travel can sometimes be slow and slightly uncomfortable. However, it is South America's ultimate budget destination, where you can easily get by on about $20 a day.
What's more, Bolivia offers some of the most breathtaking sights in the continent, such as the world's highest lake, Lake Titicaca, and the awe-inspiring salt flats of Salar de Uyuni. With its remote feel and adventurous spirit, Bolivia is one of my favorite backpacker destinations in South America.
Argentina
1 USD = 172.06 ARS
No, that is not a typo: the Argentine peso is currently at an all-time low against the U.S. dollar. This brings added benefits for American travelers. In 2016, the Argentine government removed the $160 "reciprocity fee" for U.S. citizens, and foreigners can now get a refund for the 21% value-added tax on hotel stays automatically. With this favorable exchange rate and discounts, you can spend your extra cash on steak and Malbec.
Colombia
1 USD = 4,778.33 COP
Colombia encompasses the best features of South America, including Andean peaks, Amazonian jungles, and sandy beaches within its borders. In addition to its natural allure, Colombia's major cities are experiencing a renaissance in food, art, and technology. Best of all, it remains one of the most affordable places for Americans to visit right now.
Brazil
1 USD = 5.32 BRL
Like many countries in South America, Brazil is a great destination if you want to travel without breaking the bank. However, with the exchange rate of 5.32 Brazilian reals to the dollar, you can get even more value for your money. While Rio de Janeiro is the most obvious place to spend your time and money, with incredible hotels and beautiful beaches, don't forget to explore São Paulo as well. The younger generation has brought hip galleries, museums, and bars to the city's long-neglected neighborhoods.
Nicaragua, $35/day
Nicaragua is one of the cheapest Central American destinations to travel to, although it may not remain that way for much longer. The country is often referred to as the next Costa Rica, which suggests that prices may rise in the future due to increased tourism. For now, Nicaragua remains affordable, fun, and interesting. If you enjoy outdoor activities, Nicaragua offers great opportunities for surfing, volcano hiking, and diving. For a more relaxing journey, explore the country's colonial cities or unwind on its stunning beaches. Food in Nicaragua is cheap and delicious, though it can be repetitive. Accommodation in the form of hostels is readily available throughout the country. However, it's important to note that safety concerns exist, so be sure to check the official advisory site before traveling.

For an amazing budget adventure in Central America, consider visiting Guatemala. This country is blessed with lush jungles, volcanoes, and ruins. When you need a break from outdoor sports, the colonial cities like Antigua will captivate you with their stunning architecture and charming cobblestone streets. Local food in Guatemala is both cheap and delicious, priced at around $3 for a satisfying meal (except in Antigua, where prices are closer to those in the United States).
Public transportation in Guatemala can be limited outside of major cities like Johannesburg and Cape Town. While a few private companies and trains offer transportation services, the best and perhaps cheapest way to get around the country is to rent a car and split the cost with three other people.

Mexico is often associated with beach resorts like Cancun, Cabo, or Tulum. While these locations are great, they can be pricey, especially when compared to destinations like Miami or Hawaii. However, there are other places in Mexico that offer more affordable options.

Costa Rica
1 USD = 593.31 CRC
The Costa Rican colón has experienced some depreciation recently, but it remains favorable for U.S. travelers. Plus, the country's greatest asset, its natural beauty, is mostly free to enjoy. From trekking through tropical cloud forests in Alajuela to surfing off the coast of Peninsula Papagayo, Costa Rica is one of the world's best countries for outdoor adventure. And don't forget, the hotels here are pretty great too.
Cuba
"See it before it changes" is often said about Cuba, and stepping foot here truly feels like entering a time machine. Contrary to popular belief, travel in Cuba can actually be quite affordable, especially when staying at local and charming Casas Particulares, which are family-run accommodations. With none of the typical signs of globalization, vintage cars still roam the streets, and the abundance of rum, sun, and salsa guarantee a unique experience.

Food costs can add up in South Africa, so to save money, consider cooking your own meals. Grocery stores are plentiful and offer reasonable prices. By preparing your own breakfast and occasionally dinner, you can save a significant amount of money.
However, public transportation options outside of Johannesburg and Cape Town can be limited. While there are a few private companies and trains that provide transportation around the country, the most cost-effective way to get around is to rent a car and share the cost with three other people.

Morocco, known for its vibrant and chaotic atmosphere, is a popular destination for all types of travelers. From its golden sand dunes to bustling markets and picturesque mountains, Morocco offers endless opportunities for exploration. Despite the hustle and bustle of the cities, the serene silence of the desert and breathtaking views make the journey worthwhile.
I fell in love with Morocco when I visited, and the affordability was definitely a bonus. Budget backpackers can get by on just $30-40 USD per day, while midrange travelers can have a comfortable trip for even less. Morocco offers great value for your money. In fact, I love it so much that we even run tours here!

At first glance, Namibia may not seem like a budget-friendly destination, with luxury accommodations and limited transportation options. However, with a few money-saving tips, you can explore Namibia without breaking the bank.
Choosing to camp instead of staying in a lodge is a great way to save money. Luxury lodges can cost $50-$200 per night, but campsites can be as low as -$10 per night. Government campsites are slightly higher at $15-$18 per night. Sharing the cost of a 4x4 rental with a few people is also recommended. If your accommodation has a communal kitchen, cooking your own meals will save you a significant amount of money. Entrance fees to attractions are generally affordable.

While traveling within a city is cheap, intercity transportation can be costly due to the country's size. Renting a car and splitting the cost with others is the most cost-effective option. If you're backpacking solo, consider staying in one place for a longer time to make the most of your transportation costs and have a deeper travel experience.

Mexico: Affordable and Exciting
While I had visited Mexico in the past, it wasn't until recently that I truly immersed myself in the country. And let me tell you, it exceeded all my expectations. Mexico City offers a gastronomic paradise, Oaxaca is filled with charm and mezcal, and the Yucatan Peninsula is perfect for road trips and exploring cenotes. Plus, Mexico is not only inexpensive (with a beer costing just $1-2 USD and groceries averaging around $25 USD per week), but it's also easily accessible from the US.
While there are some areas that may not be safe to explore, most of the country is ready to be enjoyed. Whether you're interested in beaches, nightlife, food, history, or nature, you'll find a safe corner of Mexico that won't break the bank. If you prefer to travel with a group, consider joining one of the tours available in the country.

Discover the Beauty of Guatemala
For a breathtaking and affordable adventure in Central America, look no further than Guatemala. This country is blessed with lush jungles, volcanoes, and ancient ruins. When you're ready for a break from outdoor activities, be sure to explore colonial cities like Antigua with its stunning architecture and charming cobblestone streets. And don't miss out on the delicious and affordable local cuisine (except in Antigua, where prices are closer to US levels).
While local transportation can be cheap, it can also be confusing and occasionally risky. The preferred mode of transport for locals is the chicken buses, which are converted school buses from North America. They don't have designated stops or price boards. Instead, people flag them down and pay the collector directly. Observing how much locals pay and emulating them will ensure you're charged the correct amount.

Explore the Americas
Mexico offers endless opportunities for adventure. This vast country is brimming with culture, nature, and some of the best food in the world. While safety concerns may have given Mexico a mixed reputation, it's important to note that most violence occurs in specific areas, and there are plenty of safe places to explore. The best part? Traveling in Mexico on a budget is a breeze. For less than $20, you can visit at least 5 stunning cenotes like the one featured above. For less than $3, you can indulge in mouthwatering street food such as tacos, quesadillas, and tortillas. The country's magnificent white sand beaches are essentially free, and the hospitality of the locals is priceless.
Getting around within cities is affordable, but intercity travel can be pricey due to Mexico's large size. Renting a car and splitting the cost with three other people (approximately $50 - per day) offers the best value. Solo travelers can stretch their transportation budget by staying in one place for a longer period, allowing for deeper exploration and a more authentic Mexican experience.
